Hacks/Hackers September Meetup

Dear Hacks & Hackers

The summer might be over (boo) but that means we're back (yay!). We're delighted to announce the September event will be on 24 September at Twitter UK.

Talks start at 7pm.

Who's speaking?

India Rakusen (@IndiaRakusen), one of the lead reporters in a new BBC/ABC collaboration called timesXtwo (Times Two).

timesXtwo is a YouTube channel aimed at reaching new and younger audiences with original journalism exploring key issues around the world. She's been reporting on the refugee crisis.

Micha Benoliel (@anthenor), CEO and co-founder of Open Garden, creators of Firechat. Micha will talk mesh networks and security. He'll tell us how Firechat was used for communication during the Hong Kong protests and Burning Man.

What about lightning pitches?

We have several!

• Alastair Reid, managing editor, First Draft News (@ajreid)

• Holly Kilroy, Umbrella

• Rajpal Rai, NowTranscribe

• Russell Merryman, London College of Communication

The FT is buying the beer!

Many thanks to the FT for sponsoring this month's meetup. You'll be able to thank Renée Kaplan who'll be at the event. Renée is head of audience engagement at The Financial Times and will be talking about her team that includes social media, data analysts, engagement producers, and other hacks and hackers.

Oh no, I'm too far down the waiting list!

Paid tickets are available for people who can't get a place. Get your limited edition "queue-jumper" pass here:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hackshackers-september-meetup-tickets-18510982848

Block booking now available for schools and universities

We've had interest in the past from academic institutions wishing to secure paid places for students. We're trialling this in limited numbers – please contact us if you'd like to know more.

Hope to see you this month!

Hey everyone, Rory here from Security First. We launched today so please feel free to download, spread the word, write, tweet etc. The more journalists and activists at risk in the field who know about it the better!

    Thanks,

Why can't I see it Dave?

    • Dave G.

Not sure - I'm in there now.

Thanks for a great do! It left me, as usual, feeling like I wished I had someone else's job rather than mine. Still, here's something for FireChat followers: https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26285-hong-kong-protesters-use-a-mesh-network-to-organise/

Great to speak with such a great bunch of people last night. Just a reminder - we'll be launching Umbrella (security app) on Monday and we'd love journalists to write about it and help spread the word with potential users. - Check out www.secfirst.org and mail me for a press pack [masked] THANKS!

Apologies... we had some admin issues last week.

No worries Peter, these things happen. Hopefully I'll get to a Thursday one at some point - the hazards of being a working parent!

controversial: the question was a setup, http://blog.cozybit.com/how-anonymous-is-firechat/

    1 · September 24

    • Edward T.

I had wondered about that. My question was going to be about how the app verifies the public keys for encryption. I know of one way to do that, but I haven't looked into how FireChat does it.

I wrote my masters thesis in Anonymous Communication so this is an interest of mine. :-)

Silly question, but how do you find out if you're too far down the list to get in? I've put myself down as going and really want to come but just not sure how it works.

Again, sorry for asking such a bone question!

  • Elizia V.

Hi Peter, Sarah and Cassie, I think I've dropped off the hacks hackers mailing list as I did receive the invitation for September or I'd been on it like a devil. Can you check the meet up mailer? V sad about this.

    September 15

    • Cassie W.

Hi Elizia, I checked and you're still on the list. So long as your email address hasn't changed, you should be getting all the announcements that are being sent. We will still be releasing more tickets for the September meetup so hopefully you'll be able to come.

Just interested to know whether a second batch was released at midday today? I refreshed between midday and 1pm (and intermittently since) and the only change I've spotted is the list dropped from 101 to 100.
