How to build a citizen newstip verification system

Hi I'm a journalist here in Portland, and would be interested in putting together a joint presentation with the hackers from the March Hare collective about their open source tool suite for collecting, filtering and managing news tips on twitter and text. I helped develop a prototype for a system that would be useful for news directors like myself while I was at Stanford last year on a fellowship (http://www.newsti.ps) ...I had used a tool called Swiftriver, which is part of the Ushahidi project.... the basic idea is to have a multi-tiered system that will allow journalists to filter through the mess that is twitter and other social media for actual real-time news tips that are verifiable and accurate.
would people be interested in something like this? if so we can set a time and date for a presentation/discussion....

Re: "The meeting time was changed a few times yesterday"

Dear organizers: Do not publish an event if you aren't committed to having it at the time and location you've listed -- people add it to their calendar, don't realize you've changed things, and will be upset when they show up to find a locked door instead of a meeting. Especially do not change the time/venue information a day before a meeting -- because there simply isn't enough time for people to find out about this even if they are all subscribed to notifications. Do not publish event information to other sites, like Calagator, only to neglect to update it and thus leave these with obsolete information. When you break these basic conventions, you hurt the very people that most want to participate in your event and lose their trust. If people can't trust the time/venue information you publish, they're not going to attend and you also hurt people's trust in other groups.

OK. The meeting time was changed a few times yesterday. I was only online for a short bit while working with the MH team and forwarded the new date of December something onto them. They did not recieve the update that the meetup was changed back. So is the meetup still tomorrow? I am confused and I think LN and Kyle are as well.

I'm postponing this meeting indefinitely. We need a *committed* venue, and, if the venue charges, as does Collective Agency, we need a commitment to collect the funds to pay the venue.

I'm very much interested in this topic and want to see this meeting happen. However, I have no contacts with suitable free venues. So I'm going to leave the meeting up on the board but push the date into December. If any of you know where we can meet that's quiet and accessible via the MAX, throw the nomination on the board.

How about we do this as the November meetup for this group - November 15th is it? And for location, we can book Collective Agency - everyone who comes can pitch in 5 bucks or so, which should cover the cost - http://collectiveagency.co/

Thought we had a monthly meeting coming up this week, but no date/location in meet-up. Is it postponed until next month?

Are you testing with the most recent SwiftRiver?

No we have not fired up the new swift river. I would love to hear about your review. We sank a ton of time into the previous version and never got something useful. Blurg...vaporware

Yeah, I agree. Rachel, do you know Joe's email address? He was the one that set up the Collective Agency the last few meetings.

Lynn, I looked up TaborSpace. It closes late in the afternoon. Those of us with day jobs will probably be unable to attend.

We have a tentative date (OK with two people and five people have signed up. I haven't seen anything from my co-organizer, though. Do you need a projector? WiFi? Is there a Github repository or something (not for SwiftRiver - I have that one).

I would be interested. There is an Online News Association conference in San Francisco coming up. I will be out of town form Sept. 18-24.

Funny you should mention SwiftRiver - I'm finally getting around to testing the new release out. Where's the March Hare tool repository?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
