The Hampton Roads Flute Choir is a non-profit organization of amateur and semi-professional flutists, with Musical Director in the person of Dr. Lori Shipley. We meet regularly to enjoy making music together, and to give concerts in the local community. Hampton University has generously provided us with a rehearsal space, Armstrong Hall, on the Hampton U campus.
Our members are diverse: working professionals, stay-at-home moms, students, retirees. We range in proficiency: intermediate, advanced, private lessons, no private lessons, flute teachers and non-flute teachers. Some of us have participated in Master Classes, some of us have attended the master classes. Many of us play additional instruments, including upright bass, clarinet, piano, voice, in additional to multiple flutes whether we own them or not. We cover the whole gamut of flutes, from piccolo through to contrabass. Our repertoire is eclectic: arrangements of the classics, folk music, popular music of the last hundred years, and contemporary pieces composed especially for flute choir. We come from across the region: Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown, Virginia Beach, Norfolk.
The thing that unites us above all is a love of the flute and playing with and bringing music to others.
The Fine Print:
Dues: $45 per quarter, payable to HRFC via cash or check to the treasurer before or after rehearsal. Dues help pay for our conductor, music, National Flute Association (NFA) dues, and travel and administrative expenses.
Please join us for a rehearsal or three and see how much joy there is in playing with a flute choir!
