Dr. Brad Quinton (Invionics (http://www.invionics.com))
Subject Matter: Veridae: From Idea to Exit
Dr. Brad Quinton has been working in the high technology industry for 15 years. He has successfully straddled academia and industry, working in parallel with much of his academic research, he received his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia in October 2008. His research lead to the formation in 2009 of Veridae Systems where he was the technical, product management and marketing lead. The venture developed a world class EDA debug product, sold it to leading semiconductor companies and was acquired by Tektronix in 20 months. Brad later led Tektronix’s Embedded Instruments Group, as Chief Architect, until May 2013. Between 2006 and 2008, he was a Consultant and Senior Design Engineer at Teradici Corporation where he designed new circuits and debugged new devices. Before this time, Brad worked for Altera, helping resolve key issues with a new product that they had introduced. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Quinton was at PMC-Sierra where as Project Lead he directly managed 10 engineers and a multi-million dollar IC development. This project was successfully released into the market. During this period, Brad was instrumental in the successful technical integration of two of PMC’s acquisitions, HyperCore (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Toucan (Galway, Ireland), into the company.

Inbiza is a provider of the professional services and systems for building and deploying Internet of Things products and solutions, based in Vancouver. Founded in 2009 by Emre Birol to help companies to develop industrial connected products and systems. Emre is going to give a presentation about the challenges that many connected product companies face in this new Internet of Things era. Also, he will make a short demo of Inbiza's new Internet of Things application development platform Connio.

Subject Matter: Legal Dimensions of 3D Printing and Scanning
The proliferation of low cost 3D printing and scanning is changing the world. But what are the legal implications? At first glance, the concerns appear similar to the well-known copyright dilemmas of the digital age. But on closer inspection, the questions are stranger and more incredible: Who is the author of an automated, machine-generated 3D portrait? Does your 3D printed pizza infringe a patent? Could your home-printed replica Nike shoes expose giant loopholes in trade-mark laws? How does patent exhaustion deal with self-replicating machines? We'll ask these questions and more as we discuss both the legal challenges and opportunities created by these technologies.
