SF Hardware Startup Meetup July 25 - Sponsored by Dragon Innovation at Pier 3

Hey Guys,

It's time for another Hardware Startup Meetup! This time we'll be hosting the event at Bloomberg Beta, an early stage VC fund from Bloomberg LP. The space is located at Pier 3 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Our sponsor this month is Dragon Innovation who work with hardware startups to bring them from prototype to high volume production. They're the folks behind some of the best known hardware startups in the scene: Makerbot, Pebble, Romotive, Sifteo, Orbotix and many more. We're excited to have them come in to tell us all about how they do their thing!

Space is tight (and so is security), so we'll need you to sign-up quick and if you don't get a spot we won't be able to have anyone crash. So be mindful of that. Also, when you sign-up there's a question asking for your first/last name + organization - make sure to fill that out because they need to know to let you in.

If you WANT TO DEMO - then we really want you! Use that link to put your name on the spreadsheet, and you're guaranteed a spot. Also, if you've already presented your project a bunch of times, we'd prefer you hold off until you have an update before you do a demo - so we can get new people doing pitches.

6pm - Door's Open, and we have beer and pizza

6:30pm - Pitches Start

7:15pm - Wrap up the Pitches, now more

9pm - We kick you out ;-)

Here's some other cool stuff going on in the Bay Area Hardware Scene:

  • Bay Area Modular Electronics Meetup - Our own Nahid Alam started this group, and I'm excited to check it out!
  • SF Internet of Things Meetup - If you can't get into our meetup - make sure to check out the SF IoT meetup on the 25th. They've got Hugo from ElectricImp coming out to talk connected devices.
  • IEEE + Eric from Pebble - Eric Migicovsky will be talking about the Pebble story on July 23rd in Mountain View.
  • r/HWStartups - As always - if you're looking for the latest in hardware startup news - check out our Hardware Startups sub-Reddit!

Let me know if there's anything I can help with, or if you want to help start something that's cool too!

- Nick

Hi Everyone, We had a fantastic time meeting many of you in July and hope to make it back out that way sooner rather than later!

We wanted to let you know, if you hadn't heard, that we just launched our crowdfunding platform for Hardware at There are a lot of great projects funding new, including Dash Robotics, who you may have met at the August meetup. Come check it out and if you have a project you're considering funding, definitely reach out to us. Look forward to your feedback as well.

    All the best, Beth

I wasn't able to make it. I have many regrets in life and missing this HW meetup is one of them.

Is it possible to get a list of people who spoke? Or maybe just reply here to this comment so I can see what you did? :)

I spoke on behalf of my company, Tactical Haptics, about a new form of tactile feedback we're trying to commercialize in the fields of gaming and medicine.

  • William P.

It was great to be able to pitch and get feedback on the haptic (touch feedback) game controller for Tactical Haptics. Thanks to all who came by after the pitch session and tried out my game play demos with the device. More info can be found on the Tactical Haptics Facebook page or Twitter if you're curious, and we'll keep you up-to-date on our progress and if we find it feasible to go on kickstarter or perhaps Indiegogo soon.

Sorry I can't make it everybody. I've got a surprise 102 temperature and I'm sure everyone will be glad that I don't bring it to share. I'm opening up my spot.

If anyone needs mechanical design, prototyping, or design for manufacturing contract work done, please send me a message. I'm an independent designer/ engineer and I love working on small start-up projects. I can also vouch for Dragon Innovation. I've worked with them before and they are top notch. Check them out for sure!

      July 24, 2013

  • Nathaniel T.

can we get a wait list, bigger venue or limit the +1 ones. I'd like to hang out with this meetup on a regular basis. Currently it feels like a bidding war on eBay. 28minutes. I should make and auto reply app for this...

    July 22, 2013

    • Nick P.

Yea, like I said below, if we can get more big venues (that don't cost anything) then we can do this. Know of any? That'd really help a lot!

      July 22, 2013

    • Michael G.

Don't forget that our sponsor Dragon is hosting drinks after the event at the Old Ship Saloon - come by if you can't make it to the meetup itself!

      July 24, 2013

  • Beth

Hey there, Shaun and Scott from Dragon are heading to the Old Ship Saloon (298 Pacific Ave) after the meetup if anyone who is currently wait listed would like to come meet us. We'll buy you a drink : )
