Volunteer Opportunity! Holiday Food Service with Citymeals on Wheels

This volunteer opportunity helps a segment of the NYC population that is particularly vulnerable during the winter months (the elderly) which is facing a steadily growing problem - hunger. As our city’s elderly grow older, they are more likely to have mobility limitations, while living at or below the poverty level. The elderly of East Harlem are particularly more vulnerable, residing in challenging living conditions alone, and who can no longer shop or cook for themselves.

Citymeals-on-Wheels (www.citymeals.org (http://www.citymeals.org/)) raises private funds to ensure no homebound elderly New Yorker will ever go a day without food or human company. Citymeals funds 33 community-based agencies that bring weekend, holiday and emergency meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers - one of the agencies we'll be helping as volunteers.

How are we helping?

On Saturday, December 21st, we'll assist the Union Settlement Senior Center Citymeals-on-Wheels program meal Prep & delivery of meals to the elderly. Volunteers should wear weather appropriate clothes and comfortable shoes as deliveries are done on foot within walking distance from the meal center. Although the weather may not always be favorable, the meals MUST be delivered as many, if not all, of the elderly in the program RELY on the meal delivery for the day.

Our Meetup

We'll meet at the Senior Center at 8:30am on Saturday for a short training, have meal preparation, then break into small teams of 2 or 3 to delivery the meals to the elderly. The time commitment ends at 1pm and goes by very quickly.

The Senior Center is located at 2205 First Avenue, near 114th street. The closest subway is the #6 train to 116th Street & Lexington Avenue, then walking east to 114th street & 1st Avenue. Nearby bus lines include the M15 and M116.
