Macros, Close-Ups and Flower Photography with Harold Davis
Friday, June 1, 2012 – Sunday, June 3, 2012
Historic Coastguard Boathouse, Pt Reyes

PLEASE DO NOT RSVP 'YES' HERE UNTIL YOU ARE ENROLLED AT THE POINT REYES FIELD INSTITUTE. You cannot pay and register on Meetup!

To register click here or call the Point Reyes Field Institute at [masked] x 373.

NOTE: The registration count on this Meetup is NOT accurate.

This weekend workshop explores the wondrous world of the very close in nature. We will photograph in the studio, and take advantage of the marvelous opportunities that Point Reyes offers for close-up work in the field. Participants will leave the workshop confident in their ability to photograph close-up, both indoors and out.

In the field, we will take advantage of seasonal subject matter such as flowers and plants, shells, and bones. In the studio, participants will learn to create and light still life compositions without the use of expensive equipment.

This workshop is intended for photographers of all levels. The instructor, award-winning photographer Harold Davis, bestselling author of Photographing Flowers: Exploring Macro Worlds with Harold Davis (Focal Press, 2012), Creative Close-Ups: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2010) and other books, will work individually with each workshop participant to achieve their goals.

Topics covered in the workshop include macro photography, still life compositions, photographing natural artifacts, post-processing photos, staging and lighting close-ups indoors, photographing on a lightbox, using backgrounds, and flower photography.

Please bring ten of your best photos on a thumb drive, a digital camera, and a tripod. If possible, bring a macro lens or other close-up equipment. Plan to also bring one natural object to photograph (a shell, a bone, a dried flower, etc.), one piece of cloth or paper of any color or size to use as a background, and one light (common household light is fine, or a light specifically intended for photography if you prefer).

Workshop limited to 18 participants.

If someone reads this before they get to the workshop, please tell Harold that I will be late. It's almost 1 now and I won't get out of Reno until 1:30. Sorry but it couldn't be avoided. I will send an email directly to Harold along with this post.

    Thanks!

@Craig: these are bunk beds indeed, the very ones the heros of the coastguard slept in when the station was operational. I do not think there is room for an Aerobed. The bunk mattresses have always seemed adequate to me, but some people have said they are glad to have brought extra padding.

    May 31, 2012

  • Harold Davis

@Kay squared: OK on the QT. Technically, this is NP property, they don't allow it, and it is important to take any bottles out rather than leaving the evidence behind. But discreet is okay, bear in mind we will likely be working late both nights after dinner.

    May 31, 2012

  • Craig Mole

Harold, are bunk beds the sleeping arrangement? Is there room for an Aerobed? Thanx. Craig

Kay and Kay here. We made it to San Fran. We will stop by the store to bring something. Is it ok to bring a bottle of wine?

My web site, if anyone is interested, is http://gregedwards.smugmug.com/
See some of you tomorrow morning and the rest after 5pm!

Greg, that is correct. I have corrected the map link. All registered participants should also have received a packet with a map from Point Reyes Field Institute. Look forward to the workshop! Harold

Inverness store 10am Friday for pre-class meetup, all welcome! Thanks Greg for the weather update, it's always chillier than you think it will be out there especially with wind.

The map reference above took me to the wrong place. I think this is where we want to go: https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q...

Thanks Beverly! And just so everyone knows and can envy our gastronomic enjoyment (as well as our photographic prowess) I will bring muffins, croissants, and Chicken Alfredo for Saturday dinner.

    May 31, 2012

  • Beverly

Hi Harold and all...Since it sounds like some folks are coming from out of town it might be difficult for them to bring food. And... since I live in the East Bay (close enough to drive)...I will bring the following food items (unless you'd prefer that I not): 9 large muffins (can be cut in half), bagels (1/2 dozen), 2 boxes of crackers, 1 pkg of cheddar and 1 of swiss sliced cheese, 2 frozen veggie pizzas. Really looking forward to the workshop.

Inverness will be 63F Saturday, low 50F, on Sunday 57, per http://www.wunderground.com/cgi... (no entry for Drakes Bay) /// Per http://www.wunderground.com/MAR... we will have 15-25 knot winds all weekend, waves up to 9ft (boat house is sheltered) /// water temp maybe 55F /// high tide about 9pm Friday of about 3.2 feet

    May 31, 2012

  • Greg Edwards

Try 2, cause email does not work with meetup.

I have a meeting Thursday night so I can't get there too early.

How about 10am behind the Inverness store? The wreck Pt. Reyes is back there and is a good photographic subject, as is the shoreline there.

If any of you are there before dawn try the boat house about .5 miles north of the store that has "Boat for Hire" on the side. I have gotten a number of great pictures there over the years.

    Thank you

    Greg

Greg do you want to name a time and place for early friday meetup? Inverness store parking lot is my suggestion. Don't know if you're really thinking pre-sunrise but I could do that since I'll be out there Thurs night. Or later in the AM. Anyone else interested in coming early on Friday?

    May 30, 2012

  • Kay Schemel

Cabby, Thanks for your kind offer but I am all packed and ready to go with towels included!
I can't wait to meet everyone.

    Kay S,

I'm more than happy to bring bath towels for you as well since they take up a fair amount of room. I can bring kitchen towels as well.

Hey Greg, I'm interested, I was planning to go early fri or maybe thurs night. Was out there last week in the wind, hoping for better weather! Where were you thinking of going?

    May 29, 2012

  • Greg Edwards

    We meet Friday evening.
    I have Friday off.
Anyone interested in arriving early to do some photography? (I grew up in Inverness a long time ago, I know a number of good places to go).

    Kay,

Since I'm driving, I will be happy to bring another small lamp with me as well as share the other one.

    May 28, 2012

  • Harold Davis

Kay, sunrise is at 5:50AM, so there is plenty of time for those so inclined (and some good locations as well).

Don't worry about bringing a lamp on the plane. I'm sure there will be enough to share. The main point of the lamp is a hands-on demo that one can shoot quality close-ups with almost any light source, it doesn't have to be fancy.

    May 28, 2012

  • Kay Schemel

    Harold,
I noticed we start with breakfast 8:30 or 9:00 does that leave us time for a sunrise for those who get up earlier?
    Kay

    May 28, 2012

  • Kay Schemel

    Harold,
Two of us are flying in from out of town...the lamp may be difficult to bring. Is there anyway anyone can bring an few extra "household lamps"? Or can we share? If I do manage to fit one in ...what wattage bulb do you advise and is that with a shade?
    Kay

Cabby, let me know your email address, and I will send you the packet of info you should have got upon registering. Best - Harold

  • Kay Broeder

Cabby, I know that I got my information about a week after I signed up. You might what to call Point Reyes to make sure they have all of you correct information. Kay

  • Harold Davis

    Hi Cabby,

I look forward to seeing you at the workshop. I'm sure you'll get an info sheet from Point Reyes Institute this coming week, but you might want to let them know you haven't got it yet because if you've never been out to the end of Pt Reyes the driving directions will come in handy. Also, please feel free to connect with me via this site or by email, my address is [masked]. Very best wishes, Harold

  • Cabby Bloss

Harold-My registration will say Caroline Bloss but I go by Cabby. I haven't received any information about the workshop from the Point Reyes Field Institute. I'm not sure where we meet. I learned a lot about it from this website and from another workshop leader's post about staying at the lifeboat station. If I hadn't found this website, I wouldn't have known about what you want us to bring! I am really looking forwared to this workshop and visiting Pt Reyes again. Thank you. Cabby

    May 26, 2012

  • Harold Davis

Greg, the workshop ends at 3PM, usually a little earlier. The last hour is for cleaning the communal facility, part of group responsibility that helps keep the cost down. I can't promise I won't say something life changing in the last few hours, but I do really think you'd be okay leaving at noon. Best, Harold

    May 22, 2012

  • Greg Edwards

Harold - the announcement says that the workshops runs until 4pm Sunday. What would I miss if I had to leave by noon? Thank you Greg

    May 21, 2012

  • Harold Davis

Kay, computers are optional. You are certainly welcome to bring one, and some people really like to work on their images during the workshop. Others prefer to concentrate on the experience and on shooting. So it is up to you. If it were me, I'd probably bring one! Best, Harold

    May 21, 2012

  • Kay Schemel

    Harold,
Are we to bring a laptop ?

    May 21, 2012

  • Harold Davis

Roy don't worry. No one goes hungry. The facility has a restaurant grade kitchen. Bring picnic for Friday night and breakfast and lunch Saturday. Dinner Saturday is potluck, bring a dish to share. Sunday there are usually left overs. Expect an info sheet from PR Field Institute.

    May 18, 2012

  • Roy

What are we suppose to bring for potluck dinner?

    May 18, 2012

  • Beverly

I joined when I signed up. There are a lot of great benefits and the cost is minimal. Plus, as Harold says, "It's a good cause." :o)

    May 16, 2012

  • Harold Davis

$237.50 for PRNSA members, $252.50 for non-members (it pays to join and is a good cause).

    May 16, 2012

  • Dale Mead

Everything's here except the price. Please advise.

    May 16, 2012

  • Beverly

I found the answer to my question on the Pt Reyes website... "Rustic accommodations at the charming and historic Lifeboat Station are included for all participants."

    May 11, 2012

  • Beverly

Are participants staying in a hotel/motel close to Pt Reyes? Just checking as I would love to take this workshop but the drive back and forth from Walnut Creek would be a bit too much...as I'm sure it would be for others who live in the East Bay, Peninsula etc. Thanks much.

    May 11, 2012

  • Harold Davis

I expect registration to open on Monday (probably after COB) on this web page: http://www.ptreyes.org/fieldins... (or you can call [masked] x 373 on Tuesday April 3).

    March 30, 2012

  • Gail Miller Berreman

Hi Harold, I will keep an eye out for this to open up on the Point Reyes Field Institute's website. Thanks for the heads up.
