This weekend workshop explores the wondrous world of the very close in nature. We will photograph in the studio, and take advantage of the marvelous opportunities that Point Reyes offers for close-up work in the field. Participants will leave the workshop confident in their ability to photograph close-up, both indoors and out.

In the field, we will take advantage of seasonal subject matter such as flowers and plants, shells, and bones. In the studio, participants will learn to create and light still life compositions without the use of expensive equipment.

This workshop is intended for photographers of all levels. The instructor, award-winning photographer Harold Davis, bestselling author of Photographing Flowers: Exploring Macro Worlds with Harold Davis (Focal Press, 2012), Creative Close-Ups: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2010) and other books, will work individually with each workshop participant to achieve their goals.

Topics covered in the workshop include macro photography, still life compositions, photographing natural artifacts, post-processing photos, staging and lighting close-ups indoors, photographing on a lightbox, using backgrounds, and flower photography.

Please bring ten of your best photos on a thumb drive, a digital camera, and a tripod. If possible, bring a macro lens or other close-up equipment. Plan to also bring one natural object to photograph (a shell, a bone, a dried flower, etc.), one piece of cloth or paper of any color or size to use as a background, and one light (common household light is fine, or a light specifically intended for photography if you prefer).

    @Craig: these are bunk beds indeed, the very ones the heros of the coastguard slept in when the station was operational. I do not think there is room for an Aerobed. The bunk mattresses have always seemed adequate to me, but some people have said they are glad to have brought extra padding.

    @Kay squared: OK on the QT. Technically, this is NP property, they don't allow it, and it is important to take any bottles out rather than leaving the evidence behind. But discreet is okay, bear in mind we will likely be working late both nights after dinner.

    Hi Harold and all...Since it sounds like some folks are coming from out of town it might be difficult for them to bring food. And... since I live in the East Bay (close enough to drive)...I will bring the following food items (unless you'd prefer that I not): 9 large muffins (can be cut in half), bagels (1/2 dozen), 2 boxes of crackers, 1 pkg of cheddar and 1 of swiss sliced cheese, 2 frozen veggie pizzas. Really looking forward to the workshop.

    I have a meeting Thursday night so I can't get there too early.

    How about 10am behind the Inverness store? The wreck Pt. Reyes is back there and is a good photographic subject, as is the shoreline there.

    If any of you are there before dawn try the boat house about .5 miles north of the store that has "Boat for Hire" on the side. I have gotten a number of great pictures there over the years.

    Kay, sunrise is at 5:50AM, so there is plenty of time for those so inclined (and some good locations as well).

    Don't worry about bringing a lamp on the plane. I'm sure there will be enough to share. The main point of the lamp is a hands-on demo that one can shoot quality close-ups with almost any light source, it doesn't have to be fancy.

I learned a lot about it from this website and from another workshop leader's post about staying at the lifeboat station.     Greg, the workshop ends at 3PM, usually a little earlier. The last hour is for cleaning the communal facility, part of group responsibility that helps keep the cost down.     Roy don't worry. No one goes hungry. The facility has a restaurant grade kitchen. Bring picnic for Friday night and breakfast and lunch Saturday. Dinner Saturday is potluck, bring a dish to share. Sunday there are usually left overs. Expect an info sheet from PR Field Institute.
