The "Half as Long as Paul's Hike" at Valley Forge : Chapel Trail, Misery & Joy

  • Apr 6, 2014 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note: This is NOT the 15 mile Sunday weekly workout that Paul hosts.

Since Paul is unable to lead a hike on Sunday, I will.  I won't be hiking at the pace he does nor getting in all the mileage he usually does, but hey it is a Valley Forge hike on a Sunday so what's not to like about that? I am trying something different to get more miles in the hike. We will hike the Chapel Trail and  will pick that up near the Visitor's Center, we just need to cross Rt 23 to get to the trail. The Chapel Trail takes us to Washington's Headquarters parking lot then we will hike Mt Misery and Mt Joy.  I will have a drop off point midway if anyone wants/needs to stop hiking but you will need to take the Chapel Trail back to  Visitor' Center by yourself.   Or you can take the paved trail back to the Visitor's Center. I have not hiked the whole Chapel Trail but I have  a map so I don't think we will get lost.  I will bring extra maps of the Chapel Trail as well.

We will meet at 9:15 AM and depart promptly at 9:30 AM.

Dogs on a leash are welcome.

Hike Starting Location and Rally Point:  **** NOTE THIS IS A DIFFERENT MEETING SPOT. We'll meet at The lower level parking lot of the Visitor's Center. This is the large parking  as you drive into the Visitor's Center. There are bathroom's there and we will meet at the picnic table by the bathrooms.  I will be wearing my pink windbreaker and have a blue backpack as well.

Total Time:  Since I have  not hiked the Chapel Trail, I am guesstimating on how long this will take, so maybe allow 3-4 hours for  hike . The Chapel Trail is about 5 miles total and we will do Mt Misery and Mt Joy 1 time each.

Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Dress appropriately for weather conditions.

As always...please remember to bring water, snacks and other essential items you may need.

You may also want to consider bringing a hat, first aid kit, walking stick(s), field guides, binoculars, and a camera.

Note: Please add a comment if you do plan to bring along your dog OR if you are ALLERGIC so that everyone is made aware in advance and can plan accordingly.

Arrival and Start Times: Please meet us at 9:15 AM. We will start hiking promptly at 9:30 AM!!

Facilities: There are bathrooms and water fountains at The Visitor's Center parking lot,  The Washington's Headquarters Parking Area and on the Mt Joy Trail

NOTICE: By attending this event you are agreeing that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AT ALL TIMES. The hike leader and other members will not be held responsible for any damages, accidents, or liabilities incurred while hiking with us.

Hi Shelley and Sabah, Sorry you could not find us. There is no 'covered parking' we were in the Visitor's Center lower level large parking lot. I have heard that GPS is not very accurate with regards to VF Park. Hope you catch us on the next hike.

I got to the visitor center before 9, asked for 'covered parking' they said there was none in the park, checked where picnic tables were, they also told me to check out other areas in park... ended up doing my own hike -
