Patient Safety: Whats the difference between an oil rig and a hospital?

We thought the title of this event was "sexy" so decided to leave it as is, but this event is about much more than the topic. I will not steal the thunder from Gert-Jan Kamps from iPatientSafety (http://ipatientsafety.com/testsiteSMPBTR142ba4dcbb42b0de/?page_id=5), but if you think about an oil rig there is no room for error. There are processes and procedures in place, continuity plans, worst case scenario planning and much more in order to preserve our planet. But what about healthcare?

We, as healthcare consumers, are individuals and each one of us is unique so do we need to industrialize healthcare first or can we jump straight to personalization?.

Given the rapid innovation cycle in technology, are we prone to making significant and potentially deadly mistakes when it comes to our health? Do we need more standards and regulations or will the industry adjust by itself?

Many questions to ponder about prior to the event, so please come prepared with your thoughts, observations and critical mind so we can have a great set of discussions on this very important topic.

First up is Gert-Jan Kamps (https://www.linkedin.com/in/gertjankamps) who will speak about the strange situation that we are designing robotic surgeons on the one hand, but on the other hand we still cannot root out persistent ‘never events’ like wrong site surgery or medication errors. In this presentation a brief overview of basic risk management principles will be given from a cognitive psychological point of view. BP’s Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and relevant parallels with healthcare will be discussed.

Next we are very happy to announce that Lies Van Gennip, CEO of NICTIZ will spend time speaking about NICTIZ and it’s mission. Nictiz is the National IT institute for healthcare. Nictiz is paid by the government, to facilitate the development of interoperability in health care (through information standards) and to monitor health IT trends. The use of national IT standards is not (yet) mandatory in the Netherlands. Nevertheless there are some area’s where standards, developed together with many stakeholders in the Dutch health care field, are successfully implemented. She will present two of those successful area’s: the emergency care setting and medication safety.

We will then break into a group discussion around Meaningful Use – for those who are following the US Healthcare market you are probably familiar with the term, for those of you who are not come and learn. The idea here is to have a great discussion around it’s viability the Dutch healthcare system.
