End of Life Care: Is there a role for data and technology?

  • Aug 1, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please only RSVP if you can commit to attend.

So, we know what people want at the end of life, where they wish to die and how we can most effectively support them to exercise genuine choice. A fresh approach to funding and commissioning health and social care can unlock resources which, as the Nuffield Trust has shown, could be better spent on providing decent social care packages and home-based nursing and support to people who are dying.

With a little courage and imagination, we can ensure that people at the end of life get the services they require, in the place of their choice, being pain free and surrounded by the people they love. This will not only benefit patients, but may also enable the wider health and social care system to overcome future challenges.

Startups:

DeadSocial

DeadSocial enables us to create a series of messages. These can consist of videos, images and text. The messages are saved and then only sent out to the user's private social networking accounts (currently supporting Facebook & Twitter) once they pass away. This action is carried out in accordance with the users 'social media will'.

By thinking about death in relation to "what is going to happen to my social networking accounts when I die?" User's are able to dehumanise death and address it from a technological perspective rather than an emotive one.

DeadSocial launched in beta on March 8th at SXSW and have been featured in CNN, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, NBC, BBC etc (example http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/22/tech/social-media/death-and-social-media)

Before launching DeadSocial was a final four startup in Then Next Web's Startup Rally in Amsterdam. DeadSocial is also kindly supported by Microsoft BizSpark.

I'm a techy & geriatrics physician that provides end of life care. Love the topic of how can data & other tech improve care. Too bad I wasn't able to see the presentations -- Maneesh, is a video archive of the event available?

Hi Wen - No video archive unfortunately. Yes, this is certainly an area that more startups could get involved with.

I guess I'm biased as was speaking - however the fact that so many people came on such a hot & humid day was great - many thanks to the audience.

Hi Maneesh, So good meetups planned including this one, which I'm interested in. However, I'm based in Dublin, Ireland and I was wondering if there are any plans to use online conferencing - Google hangout or Skype to make it easier for people outside London to participate?

    Many thanks

    Richie
