WHAT? -- We are a literary and topical book discussion group in North Phoenix. We primarily read books & authors from titles recommended or reviewed on National Public Radio programming.
WHEN? WHERE? -- We meet monthly, currently on Friday evenings at Bookman's Entertainment Center on the NW corner of 19th Ave and Northern.
HOW? -- Our meetings feature lively, thoughtful conversation about the books, authors, themes, writing style, and our opinions on all the above. Like NPR itself, we focus on substance, not shout-a-thons.
WHAT DO WE READ? -- We read both fiction and nonfiction, from books reviewed/mentioned on NPR programming. View books we've read in the past by looking at past meetups.here>.
HOW MANY BOOKS DO WE READ MONTHLY? We usually choose 2 or 3 books per month so there's variety and hopefully everyone finds a suggested book they actually want to read. Everyone is welcome at the meetings, however, whether they've read 1, 2, 3 or none of the books.
HOW ARE THE BOOKS CHOSEN EACH MONTH? Democracy rules! Every several months, group members receive an email with a link to an online poll so everybody can vote for what we read. We try to choose our books 6 to 8 weeks in advance to allow time to borrow or purchase and read the books.
HAVE A SUGGESTED TITLE? Have a suggestion for a book we should read? Leave your suggested titles <here> or <here>. View the titles already suggested <here>. Suggested titles that didn't "win" in our polling are found <here>.
IS IT FREE? - We usually charge $1 per attendee at each meeting. Why? Meetup.com charges the group Organizer a $12 monthly fee and the $1 helps defray that cost. First-time guests are free.
For the time being we are limiting ourselves to meeting at Bookman's. If you would like to help organize meetings in another part of town, please contact the organizer Ginna or assistant organizer Heather.
