The Valencia Hiking Crew hopes to provide you the hiker easy access to the many trails that surround the communities that we live in. Please be sure to read the hike descriptions to get a good understanding of what you're in for as we do hikes of many varying levels and each one could require different skills or abilities. The ultimate goal is to have a fun and enjoyable experience.
I see the VHC as that of an intermediate or lower advanced hiking group. Yes, we'll occasionally throw in some killer strenuous hikes. However, my idea of a great hike is one that's just hard enough to where I get a good workout and am still able to enjoy the experience. For me this means a hike of up to 12 miles with under 3000 feet of gain.
In my opinion hiking is about the terrain, social aspect, strenuosity and pace. As far as the terrain goes, I'll do my best to avoid fire roads whenever possible. Trails, trail blazing, bushwhacking or rock scrambling are my preferred routes with my favorite being in or around water. A small amount of danger or risk, while still being safe, can also add to a hikes enjoyment. I enjoy sharing trails I've been shown by others or discovered with all our members. If I know you're having a good time that adds to my enjoyment. There is a point, however where too many people on a hike can diminish the enjoyment. While I rarely limit the numbers I'll allow on a hike, I do control participation by the type of hikes I post. This is part of the reason I rarely do beginner hikes.
How strenuous and how much you are willing to push yourself on a hike is different for everyone and one of the main reasons I try to mix up the hikes offered. As for the pace the general rule of thumb is 2.5 miles an hour. While I get accused on occasion of going too fast I do like to take in the surroundings as well as enjoy the company of the great people I've met through this group.
Just some thoughts . . . .
See ya on the trail….Don T.
