Important Information About Each Hike

Please be aware of our group rating system. We require a 5-star rating or no rating. To join our group you had to agree. Read why.

Summary of all rules: Be considerate and cooperative by following our rules. The only unusual rule is the one involving the 5-star rating.

RULE 1: Stay within 5 steps of the person in front of you. I call this yelling distance. If you have a problem like needing to go to the bathroom, an injury, or anything else we will stop. If you are out of yelling range, then you are asking for a problem.

This may sound obvious, but you need to go at my speed. If you want to go slower or faster no problem. Just let me know your plans. I'm not going to walk at your speed.

RULE 2: Pay attention to the hike! Do not get so involved in conversation that you don't know what is going on. (I've even done this as the group leader!)

Are you physically able to do this hike? I go to a lot of effort to list the distance, hours of hiking, terrain, and other event information in the write up with critical information on the first line. If you have difficulty keeping up and are always behind, then this event is not for you.

If you invite guests for an event, make sure they know RULES 1 and 2. You can invite as many guests as you like, though you can only RSVP for 1 guest. Inform us that you are bringing additional guests in the RSVP COMMENT area.

If you Rsvp, we expect you to show up or change your rsvp. No-Show Policy
• Don't bother rsvping NO.
• Leave a Comment for a MAYBE rsvp.
• It's always okay to just show up.

How to find the meeting place without getting lost. Go

Plan to arrive 30 minutes early using something like Google Maps for planning. I plan 15 minutes for tardiness, 15 for traffic problems. If you are late to an event, we will start without you.

Plan for the event to take an extra hour, so you can enjoy the event. I hate events when I'm on a restricted time schedule because I've planned something right afterwards.Read this.

If you need or plan to leave early, just say something. Disappearing can seriously delay the entire group while we send out search parties. More.

Unless you have special knowledge of an area, keep advice as to what trail to take or what direction to travel to yourself. Since we are explorers, not just hikers, there are many route options on each hike. More

BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. Wear appropriate clothing, shoes and long pants. Though I hate bushwhacking, sometimes it's the only sensible option.

So we can quickly start, pay the event fee ($3 for 2015) as soon as you arrive with the correct change.

You can pay a one time calendar year fee ($12 for 2014) or family calendar year fee ($18 for 2014). Family members must live at the same address. Details.

Potlucks. Bring some great food and drink. More

There is only one main group at Hiking Around Philly. Events are open to each member. It's improper to organize members for a conflicting event or another group during hikes.

Do not post comments about the weather, because the weather report changes every hour. Email me about a serious weather situation, so I can inform the group. I regularly check the US Weather Service hourly graph showing many weather parameters. I'll report a problem to the group and/or try to adjust the hike time.

Your MEETUP NAME is a special name that is used for meetup activities. Organizers do not know your real name. So, please use a meetup name that resembles your real name. If your name is Barbara Somethingorother, then use a name like Barb S or Barbara So. There are 27 Barbara's in every group, so the Meetup name, "Barbara", will NOT help identify you.

Contact me through direct email via the link on the left of each page. A link is next to my photo. If I take the time to personally contact you via email, then please respond.

Eating out. Bring cash. Credit cards can be problematic. Figure out your own bill. More.
