Description:
From the Chantry Flats upper parking area, we'll hike down the Paved Road to the Gabrielino Trail through an enchanted portion of the San Gabriel mountains, passing through Roberts Camp, Fern Lodge, leading to the 50' Sturtevant Waterfall. Then we'll continue uphill passing through Spruce Grove & up to Sturtevant Camp. Then we'll head down the Zion trail with a short side trip to Mt. Zion (3,575'). After Mt. Zion we'll drop down to Hoegee's Camp then head back down on the Upper Winter Creek trail back to Chantry Flats parking lot. Plan on returning to the parking lot around 2 PM. Possible side hike to Hermit Falls if everyone agrees.
This is one of my favorite Southern California hiking spots. Lots of shade, streams, pools of water and stream crossings. And I know you'll love it too!
What to Bring:
Bring your ten hiking essentials, two liters of water, lunch, snacks and layers of clothing (hat, gloves are not a bad idea, either!). The weather can range from cool to warm depending on the time of day and if you get wet while crossing streams. You might also consider trekking poles for balance while rock hopping.
Directions:
Take the 210 west to Arcadia, follow Santa Anita Avenue north. Continue to the edge of the city, pass a sturdy gate and drive up a winding road to the end and you will be in the Chantry Flats parking area. In case you find the lots completely filled, parking is allowed on the road, but each car MUST be entirely behind the white lane or it will be ticketed by the Forest Service, or towed if it blocks the road. Remember to display your Forest Service Adventure Pass or it will be ticketed, whether it's on the road or in one of the parking lots.
Carpooling:
I highly recommend carpooling, Plan carpools and meeting points accordingly. Post a comment on this page, exchange e-mails, etc. letting others know if you need a ride or can drive, and a convenient place/time to meet. The Orange Park 'n Ride is one possibility. Just don't forget that each car requires an Adventure Pass.
