About the book
Building Modern Houston tells a story of Houston’s architecture during its transformation from “Bayou City” to “Space City.” It is a pictorial history of modernism’s legacy in Houston that includes the story of the Astrodome, landmarks of NASA’s history, the surviving treasures of the Richmond Avenue corridor, Houston’s earliest modern era skyscrapers, private homes and the post war suburban expansion.
The Presenting Author
Anna Mod is a historic preservation specialist with SWCA Environmental Consultants in Houston. She is a board member of The Heritage Society, Texas Dance Hall Preservation, and a cofounder of Houston Mod, a nonprofit that promotes knowledge and appreciation of modern architecture and design. She is published in Cite Magazine and Texas Architect magazines and is a contributing author of Buildings of Texas, vol. I, part of the national series Buildings of the United States published by the Society of Architectural Historians and due out in April 2012. She has taught historic preservation courses at Prairie View A&M and the University of Houston. Anna Mod grew up in Houston. She is a 1986 graduate of Tulane University with a BA in Art History and Latin American Studies. Her graduate degree in Historic Preservation is from the University of Vermont in Burlington.
