Hive has almost nothing to do with Rhipe. Hive allows you to use SQL-alike language (e.g. HQL) to access HDFS-resident data and perform simple aggregation/stats/analysis functions on it. Simply put it's a layer ontop of Hadoop which generates mapReduce jobs from HQL expressions. Rhipe is an R package which allows you to run mapReduce jobs from within your R session (e.g. console) and use R language to write mapRecude functions. This allows you to apply R's stats methods on HDFS data.
