Inquiring Minds: What can be done about income inequality?

Event: Inquiring Minds

Topic:  What can be done about income inequality?

Host:   Kevin Moriarty

Some questions related to the topic:

What is income inequality?

Is income inequality a bad thing?

What are the benefits due to differences in income (perhaps a more objective way to phrase income inequality)?

What forces contribute to differences in income?

What forces work against differences in incomey?

If income inequality is bad, what are the results, based on historical evidence?

How has capitalism affected income inequality?

Has there ever been a time in history that has had less diverse income, and what were the consequences?

What would/does happen when economic redistribution occurs?

If differences in income creates unnecessary suffering and death, what ethical obligations do we have to act?

Assuming there is an obligation to act, what actions may yield the greatest positive results and why?

If you have an opinion or insight come and share it; if you want an opinion, there will be many people willing to share theirs.

    Full participation by attendees to the relevancy of the topic was gratifying. Good stuff. Thanks.

    My thoughts:
    The income inequality born from capitalism is rooted in the structure of its political & economic institutions--which in turn shapes the institutionalized relations of education, the media, healthcare, and other relations as well. In other words:
    If you pay you play. And the more you pay the more you play. :)

    ~~~Thanks for listening...Mary
    I was welcomed and had a very interesting experience at my first HSGP meetup. This topic was suggested at that time and I was looking forward to a passionate discussion, but alas, I have another class that morning and can't come to this meetup. I hope to make the next gathering.
