Inquiring Minds: Does voting matter?

Event: Inquiring Minds

Topic:  Does voting matter?

Host:   Kevin Moriarty

Does your vote make a difference?

What effects have voting results had, and not had, historically (if my grammar is correct)?

Is there something better than voting, for people who want to make a difference?

Perhaps there are only two things in life: 1) Trying to figure stuff out, and 2) Changing your behavior based on what you figured out.

Help figure out the first thing.

Thanks Mary, but I cannot take credit for mentioning Project Vote Smart. Not sure who brought this forward, but it sounds like one of the many non-profits Mike Franklin supports.

  • Mary's a site I referenced at the mtg. that might be useful: Michael Parenti Political Archive. Therein you'll find his detailed article on "Stolen Elections." Other informative articles are listed as well.

John Wurm cited Project Vote Smart, a web site that gives info. on candidates for public office. (Thanks John)
And I would like to add one more helpful site: gives info. on interest groups and the money/amount handed out to the candidates [aka "bribes"]. Also: I left the meeting before topic for next mtg. was selected. I'd appreciate if you could let me know what it is. Thanks.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to this discussion as this is an important topic to me. If you are new to voting methodology do some net searching for range voting, Condorcet voting or (my preferred method) approval voting.

Our single-choice system (technically known as "plurality") is the absolute worst possible system and many people believe, myself included, that merely changing the voting system would make a tremendous difference. If you are an advocate of IRV (instant runoff voting) do some comprehensive critical research as IRV has some well documented and very serious flaws. A search for "irv flaws" will do the trick.

    My view:
Since "Democracy is in the hands of the beholder"
then we the 99% are empty-handed.
As you know...when money talks...bull##it begins.
    ~~See ya! :)
