Brian Calaway: Odyssey of the Mind After School

PLEASE NOTE DATE HAS CHANGED TO 09/22. THANKS!

Special Presentation by fellow Humanist Brian Calaway!

Parents, Grandparents, Aunts & Uncles! Bring your school-age K-12 children and their friends to enjoy this fun event and learn about Odyssey of the Mind After School!

This program is a way to immerse students in the humanities outside of school, a way for student to create and weave music, art, scriptwriting, set design, costumes, architecture, and dance into a public performance while using all that they have learned and being motivated to learn even more.

Odyssey of the Mind After School – non profit organization's Mission: To promote creativity, divergent thinking, team-work skills, and self-confidence in youth by providing them the opportunity to participate in the Odyssey of the Mind Program in an after-school setting which requires the use of the Humanities when demonstrating team solutions. http://odysseyofthemindafterschool.weebly.com

This event will showcase the Odyssey of the Mind program, what it is, how it works, and how it directly supports the Arts and Humanities. At the event, attendees will view a short video about Odyssey of the Mind and creative problem solving. They will view a long-term solution skit with props, costumes, backdrops, and characters being judged at a local competition.

Directors of Odyssey of the Mind After School will further explain the program and then challenge everyone to solve a variety of spontaneous challenges which is what students' teams would practice for the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition. The emphasis will be on having fun, meeting new people, trying something new, introducing everyone to the program, and encouraging students to sign up to participate in the program that will run from October, 2012 through March, 2013.

Odyssey of the Mind incorporates the STEAM initiative providing challenges to students where the arts, math, science, engineering, and technology as well as writing skills are needed to solve the long-term problems. 21st Century Skills are reinforced while meeting Common Core Curriculum standards. Even NASA understands the connections for the future by sponsoring a problem every year.

Odyssey of the Mind After School Directors have talked to so many people who participated in the Odyssey of the Mind program in their youth and they remember, sometimes decades later, the profound influences Odyssey of the Mind had in their lives and in their career choices. Examples: An extremely introverted student who now is a Disc Jockey at a radio station in Tucson. A female student helped her team meet the engineering long-term challenge one year, later going to college to become an engineer at a time when very few women considered that career. Odyssey teammates bond through this process and help and support each other at other problem times in their lives becoming life-long friends.

Flyp Media, an online magazine, covered Odyssey of the Mind at a World Final event and has included video that people could watch to get more of an idea about Odyssey of the Mind long-term problem presentations. http://www.flypmedia.com/content/brain-teasers

It was great fun! The kids proved, not surprisingly, that they run circles around us adults, creatively (and literally). This looks like an exceptional program, and if we can put together a team of 5-8 kids who can come to the HSGP Community Center once a week, perhaps on Sundays, Brian and his mom will come and coach the kids. We should absolutely take advantage of this opportunity.

We are looking for 5-8 kids to start a team at the Humanist Community Center. The kids would meet 1 day per week, perhaps on Sundays, since many of us will be there 2 Sundays per month already. Brian says he will give us a special low price.

Well, damn. Life conspired to have us miss this. If there is ever another overview of this program, I'd love to see it; I think it would fit in really well at my kids' charter school!

I apologize for the date changes! If you are new to us, please know that this kind of flip-flopping is not our usual way of operating! Please come if you can. I'm sorry for any inconvenience!

Our grandson participated in OOTM International a few years ago, and it was a wonderful experience for him!
