The Humanist Community of Iowa State Penitentiary began in July of 2012, founded by the initiative of Lyle Simpson, former national AHA president and member of the Iowa Humanists. Dr. Paul Knupp, President of the Humanist Society of Iowa and Humanist Chaplain, has functioned since then as the outside sponsor.
