His was a gamble that twenty years of research and study, distress, anguish of body and soul searching, let alone marital pressure, would not destroy him in a flurry of disbelief. This was Charles Darwin, husband, father, medical school and priestly drop-out with a mere bachelor’s degree facing the challenge: Would he be the first to publish the Theory of Evolution and thereby be given the credit – or blame? Would he be applauded – or shamed and disgraced? We all know about his faith-shattering book, Origin of Species. One year before that book was published, Middle-aged Charles Darwin received a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace asking for Darwin’s good offices in presenting Wallace’s research to the Linnean Society. Horrified, Darwin realizes that Wallace has come to the identical conclusion as Darwin himself. In the scientific world there is a truism that reads something like “first come, first served,” so the question becomes whether Darwin should try to supersede Wallace in getting published. This evening’s program will be a dramatic reading of that event through a conversation between Darwin and his Christian wife Emma as they struggle with honor, truth and potential fame in the world of science.

Preceding the program will be our potluck supper. You might bring salad, casseroles, dessert or main course, enough to serve four. Somehow it always works out in the end. Try to arrive a bit early so the setup is ready by 6:30, then settle in and enjoy. RSVP Jack Sechrest at abm9@comcast.net or (630) 554-8058 or for further information.
