Tutorial Design Basics
I get it. You only have two hours to get your player from “What is this thing?” to “Wait, I can’t get my money back?” Calm down little game dev. The technical writer is here to save you.
This talk covers the basics of information design for building a tutorial: data chunking, working memory limits, gauging player understanding, avionics, stealth learning, and organization. If you’re good, I’ll throw in a bit on UI.Bio: Born during the School House Blizzard, I fled to California at 18. Once here, I realized I was only qualified for technical writing, game design, and garbage collection. I’m terrible with memory leaks (a genetic condition), so I took the first two jobs. You may know me from my work on Star Trek: Bridge Commander, Flux Warden, and The Oracle Internet File System User Guide.

Mountain View, CA 94041- If you are driving: The entrance to the parking garage is on Bryant and California Street. There is a barrier arm in the down position during business hours, press the call button from your vehicle to announce yourself and the security guard will raise the barrier arm for entry. If the garage gate is down after hours, you will need to press the button again when exiting. Please park in the designated open parking spaces on floors 1-4 keeping in mind that you will take the elevator up to the lobby. Take the elevator to the Lobby and follow through to the Fenwick entrance across the hallway. All guests must sign-in at the Reception Desk.
