The Universe is big. Really big. Even bigger than that. Bigger than you imagine. Or can possibly imagine. So the trick is to imagine it. So you need to know what we know. Which, since I got my Ph.D. in 1972, is a lot more than I knew. Or knew that I would know. The Universe is full of surprises. Who knew that we would discover more than 900 planets in the last 15 years. And that we will discover new planets faster and faster as the technology improves. Will we find life on other planets? You betcha (or, I bechta). And soon (10 years?). Is there life on Mars? Maybe. Moons of Jupiter. Possibly. Moons of Saturn. Also possible. But Life, at least complex life, doesnt come easy. The Universe, the Galaxy, the Solar System is full of threats. More than you imagine.
We're very lucky to be here, now, to study what could disappear anytime. What are those threats. Why is the earth being so kind to us? Or is it.
Lets talk. I'm talking, weekly.. Come to the Senior Center, 241 W 72st, Tuesdays at 1:00. You dont have to be a senior.
