Indy WordLab June: Sarah Layden

Indy Wordlab is a monthly reading series/open writing workshop. A local writer reads their work, takes questions, and offers a writing experiment, Attendees take 30-40 minutes to write on the prompt, and then reconvene in small groups to share their work.

June's WordLab will be led by Sarah Layden.

Sarah Layden's debut novel, TRIP THROUGH YOUR WIRES, is forthcoming from Engine Books in early 2015. Her fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared in Sudden Flash Youth, Stone Canoe, Blackbird, Artful Dodge, PANK, Ladies' Home Journal, The Humanist, and elsewhere. She is a winner of an AWP Intro Award, the Allen and Nirelle Galson Prize for Fiction, and two Society of Professional Journalists awards. She teaches writing at IUPUI, Marian University, and the Indiana Writers Center in Indianapolis.

Nicely done. It's interesting to hear a literary fiction voice, as opposed to essays. (I'm not opposed to essays. I just haven't heard lit fiction in a while.)

A unique and interesting twist on the writing prompt, it reached down deep and pulled out some dark stuff... Great Event !!!

Inspiring, refreshing meetup - everything it promised to be!
I was impressed by the high quality of writing among workshop participants (which is not always the case in writing groups). The speaker was both professional and approachable, and very willing to share both her work and the journey behind her first novel. The meetup format allows for great discussions, a chance to develop new writing muscles, and just plain fun. Overall, this seems to be a writing community that is serious about writing and about helping one another become better at the craft.

Any advice on parking for this event?
(I'm new in town and unfamiliar with downtown.)

Parking downtown is very easy. If you get there early enough, there's space in the lot in front of the store. Otherwise there's paid parking along the street. There's also free parking on the street behind Yats, which is very close by.
