In Memoriam, Huey Long, 1904-2009

Huey Long, famed guitarist and the last surviving member of the original vocal group, The Ink Spots, passed away on June 10, 2009 in Houston, Texas at the age of 105.
Huey Long was born in Sealy, Texas and worked in various jobs in the Houston area until he got a break playing a banjo in 1925's top band "Frank Davis Louisiana Jazz Band". The "Ink Spots" had just reached their peak in 1936 when Ink Spot and leader, Bill Kenny talked Huey Long into giving up his trio and becoming an "Ink Spot".
Mr. Long’s signature guitar styling can be heard on the original recording of the mid-40's war-years tunes like "If I Didn't Care", "My Prayer", "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano", "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire", "Java-Java", "Street of Dreams" "To Each His Own" and many more songs featuring Huey's famous guitar.
His incredible versatility in R&B, Jazz and Bebop showed him to be a master of a variety of genres, switching back and forth between banjo and guitar depending on the stylistic requirements of the time. After writing and arranging more than 80 songs for chord melody guitar style, he decided to move back to his "roots" in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990’s.

On June 19, 2007, Huey Long’s daughter, Anita Long founded the Ink Spots Living History Music Museum in the Historic Heights section of Houston, TX. The Ink Spots Museum was created to preserve Huey Long’s legacy and the Ink Spots’ contribution to music. Preserved in the museum are artifacts of his musical journey, history, memorabilia and songs.
