If you believed the planet was threatened, wouldn't solving that crisis be worth a few tricks, a few short cuts?

Maybe even a few lies?

People lie all the time. Should scientists be held to a higher standard when it comes to the facts, the methods, the truth, when it comes evaluating the physical world?

Or is it ok to:

- Conceal data from critics who might find flaws?

- Manipulate the graphs to produce more dramatic graphs of the crisis?

- Add a few "guesses" to the computer programs that will make predictions for the future 50 years hence?

- Seek to chill out the scientific publication of scientists who hold a minority view?

One scientists suggested that scientific journals that allow articles by skeptics be black balled:

"Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal. We would also need to consider what we tell or request of our more reasonable colleagues who currently sit on the editorial board."

What are the obligations of scientists to the truth? And do the scientist who are hte skeptics meet these obligations? What obligations does the media have? What happens when spheres of science, politics and public policy clash? What happens when if we do nothing, a crisis may get to the point where we can't save the planet? Is there an effort behind the scenes to chill scientific debate? To slant the data? To downplay some data? Or are the critics using a few cases to ignore the weight of the overall evidence? Perhaps the skeptics have a conflict of interest?

Should scientists have to disclose their political biases?

What responsibilities does the scientific media have to balance when some aspect of science is politically charged?

Join us for a lively discussion.
