Announcing a new Meetup for Internationals in Wien!

What: Trip down the Wachau to Duernstein

When: Sunday, September 12,[masked]:00 AM

Meet at Westbahnhof at 9.00am AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS LEADING TO THE PLATFORM THE TRAIN LEAVES FROM (REX 1614, Track 5).

Total cost for the trip is approx 36? plus whatever you spend on lunch and dinner (there is the option to skip dinner and go straight home if your budget is tight: of course, you could also always bring a packed lunch).

My phone number is[masked] if you need to call me.

Here is the itinerary:

? Travel on a Einfach-Raus Ticket (28 Euros ? good all day, on any regional train, for up to five people ? so, about 6 Euros)
? Depart 9:14 with REX 1614, Track 5
? Arrive 10:32 (no transfers, 1:18 travel time)
? 20 minute walk to Monastery Melk ? thus if we wanted, we could catch the 10:55 tour
Melk
? Melk Monastery
o English tour at 10:55 optional
o Admission without a tour = 7,70 Euro
o Admission with a tour = 9,50 Euro
? Lunch
o Pizzeria in the village square
o We'll have about an hour for lunch.
? Depart Melk at 13:50 with DDSG Blue Danube ship MS Prinz Eugen
o 20 Euros for a one-way Melk-D?rnstein
o Donaustation Nr. 11. R?cking 1, 3390 Melk
o Note ? you must not cross the bridge, but instead go right along the river a bit
o About 15 minutes from Melk village square
? Arrive D?rnstein at 15:10 (a 1:20 trip ? long enough to have a drink or to and enjoy the scenery, not long enough to get bored sitting on a ship)
o Donaustation Nr. 20. Unterhalb vom Stift
D?rnstein
? Hike up to ruins
? Dinner at local heurige
Train home
? Roughly hourly departures, taking about 1:20 to reach Vienna
(Franz Joseph)
o 15:45 (change at Krems) - to catch this train would mean no dinner, though
o 16:47 (change at Krems)
o 17:45 (change at Krems)
o 18:47 (change at Krems)
o 19:26 (no change)
o 19:45(change at Krems)
o 20:45 (change at Krems ? last train out!) Later ones leave from Krems

Original Post
take the train in the morning to Melk, visit the monestary, lunch in the village, take the boat down to Duernstein through the Wachau (UNESCO listed), drinks on board on the deck, hike up to the ruins of Duernstein (Richard the Lionhearted slept there); early dinner at a local Heurige, train back to Vienna. Costs can be reasonable - train with the Einfach-Raus ticket is only 6 Euros roundtrip. Melk tour about 7; the boat is maybe 18 (i will confirm); food is based on consumption. But it is a lovely day trip, espcially at harvest time.
