Topics and Speakers
CES Recap and Fun With 1,000 Beacons
David Helms, Chief Product Officer, Radius Networks
David will give us quick highlights from CES, where Internet of Things was on everyone's mind. He'll also describe how Radius Networks built the indoor navigation system for the show, covering 4 million square feet with nearly 1,000 Bluetooth Low Energy beacons.
Inside the WeatherBug Network
Chris Sloop, Co-founder and CTO of Earth Networks
Ever wonder how lightning strikes and other real-world weather conditions magically show up in near real-time on your smartphone? The secret is lots of real-time sensors and lots of real-time data analytics.
Chris Sloop, Co-founder and CTO of Earth Networks -- the makers of WeatherBug -- will give us an insider's look at how their network of 10,000+ weather and lightning sensors works. The WeatherBug network is the largest commercial-grade weather and lightning observation network in the world. Chris will explain weather sensing 101 and discuss/demonstrate how physical environmental conditions are measured by real-time sensors across large geographic areas, and how that measured data is moved into the cloud and processed by data analytics to produce forecasts and alerts that are delivered to mobile and desktop applications for users around the world.
IoT Innovation for the Public Sector
Dan Hoffman, Chief Innovation Officer, Montgomery County, Maryland
The Internet of Things offers opportunities and benefits for citizens in cities and counties across the nation and across the world. Montgomery County, Maryland is at the forefront of exploring innovative IoT applications and seeing how they could serve the citizens of their county.
Dan Hoffman, Chief Innovation Officer of Montgomery County, will give us a first-hand look at how IoT can serve the public sector and how Montgomery County is exploring connected device technologies and use cases. He'll talk about the types of use cases Montgomery County is evaluating, some of the results observed thus far, and areas where more improvements are needed. He'll also share details of the SCALE project for the Global City Teams Challenge and talk about the newly opening Thingstitute - a gathering place for working on IoT and Maker projects.
