Fall 2014 Gathering - Special Event with Mobile Monday Detroit - Troy

For our fall gathering, we are heading to Mobile Monday Detroit for a special Internet of Things event http://www.meetup.com/Mobile-Monday-Detroit/events/204309882/

Our co-organizers, Itai and Brian, will be among the event speakers.

PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION AND START TIME

The 'Internet of things' has been an increasingly discussed topic in 2014 as companies, governments and educators try to understand the concept, the changes it will bring and the opportunities it will provide. It is defined as, "a scenario in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers which have the ability to transfer data over a network allowing them to send and receive data".

In November's Mobile Monday Detroit, we will explore the "Internet of Things" and its implications for consumers, businesses, government. The event is sponsored by the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan (MTAM), Mobile Monday Michigan, and SilkRoute Global.

This event will be held at NextWave Accelerator in Troy. As always, refreshments will be served and free parking will be provided compliments of SilkRoute Global, owners of the NextWave Accelerator.

TOPICS:

Introduction to the Internet of Things
Itai Ben-Gal, iRule

Itai will focus on:

History of IoT
• Why IoT is different from previous technologies
• The diverse markets of IoT with examples
• Synergies between the worlds of IoT, wearables, and mobile devices.
• Business opportunities around IoT. The scale of the market

APIs and Why "Connected Things" are not the Internet of Things

Brian Mulloy, Apigee

The Internet of Things is arriving, and with it, some big challenges. Yes, the “things” are connected to the web but the things are not communicating among themselves as a web. We are not realizing the full potential of the Internet of Things. We will explore how to design and develop API-first solutions that work harmoniously as a system of systems. We will learn about “big apps”—emergent systems that enable apps on multiple devices to work together—and how big app thinking helps developers create holistic experiences across smartphones, laptops, connected cars and wearables. And we’ll touch on how looping big apps into big data creates a compelling adaptive platform for the IoT.

Securing IoT: Mobile Challenges and Realities
Mark Stanislav, Duo Security

The Internet of Things has taken off quickly in large part to the mobile capabilities they tend to build support for. Whether you control your thermostat from another country or set your oven to broil while at work, IoT and mobile are tightly coupled. As this nascent space grows, it's become clear that security related to mobile implementations have plenty of room to improve.
This presentation will give specific examples across a number of technical areas of mobile development as they relate to IoT security concerns. Whether you are writing mobile software for IoT already, plan to, or just wanted to learn more about app security in general, this talk will provide some insights to keep you secure. Also discussed will be BuildItSecure.ly, a community effort to provide knowledge transfer and security research assistance to IoT vendors who need assistance.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Itai Ben-Gal, CEO and Co-Founder, iRule

Itai holds degrees in both Management Information Systems (MIS) and Management from the University of Michigan, where he founded his first company, Cube Systems, an IT service provider.

Itai has always had a love for technology, movies and home theater. In 2003, the journey began to build his home theater after a local home theater club meet. After years of learning and assisting others with their own theaters, Itai designed and built his own home theater. The theater incorporates several unique solutions, earning him a feature in the DVD series “Home Theaters Revealed”.

Following the completion of his theater, Itai was dissatisfied with existing control systems and began researching new solutions. After discussing with his friend Victor the connected home, cloud computing, smartphone and tablet platforms, iRule was founded. Itai has focused on bringing cutting edge technologies from IT and other industries to innovate the iRule offerings. Under Itai’s leadership, iRule has expanded their platform to include professional, residential and commercial applications.

Itai is a board member of the Consumer Electronics Association TechHome Divison.
