What makes a good user interface. What is user experience and usability? How does a human centered and agile development process work? How to involve the users from the beginning on, work agile and use the advantages of gaining feedback from your minimum viable products? Why are usability tests necessary and how many do i need?

I will anwer these and other questions and give some examples.

Will visual composition or even visual programming further IoT?

IoT is at one level the networking of devices. Been there done that, embedded devices, SPS programming. We are taking now a new spin at an old thing, at a new level of abstraction, it seems. Maybe, AND we as engineers have a chance to take a customer centric approach, like some engineers did with the smart phone in the communication industry.

Where does “visual” come into play and how is the consumer of today becoming more and more a producer of tomorrow? Is this just a mental gymnastic exercise? My thoughts and findings and a possible solution.

Ambient and Peripheral Interaction in the Internet of Things

Individuals are enabled to track and optimize their own life (quantified self), make use of smart health and mobility services. Organizations can implement smart maintenance and human error prevention mechanisms. However, most of IoT products and services require display-based user interaction, a lot of them are implemented in mobile applications. The interaction with apps requires heavy cognitive effort and can lead to information overload, which can result in techno-stress and techno-anxiety. A solution to avoid these “modern diseases” connected with the IoT are so-called ambient and peripheral interaction paradigms. Ambient and peripheral interaction is a way to transport information and to enable user interaction that does not require users to spend full attention on the interaction itself. The talk will illustrate possibilities, trends and challenges related to ambient and peripheral interaction in the IoT and will give and outlook on how ambient and peripheral interaction can support basic human values (e.g. sustainability) in an interconnected world.
