IoT Midlands Meetup #1: Show and Tell

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a buzzword. Definitions as to what IoT actually is vary considerably, but its foundation could be considered to be connecting everyday physical ‘Things’ to the Internet. The data from Things can then be shared. Existing Things will need to be hooked up to the Internet. New Things will be required. New data clouds will proliferate. New services and business models can be formed.

Nobody quite knows where it will go but elements of this are already happening. You can monitor your home, your health and your pets today. Industry is tracking goods, vehicles and communities. More examples are here: http://postscapes.com/internet-of-things-examples/.

How do West Midlands Small and Medium sized businesses (SMEs) capitalise on this projected market explosion? Opportunities abound for existing companies to adapt their existing products to be ‘connected’, invent new products, or prepare to deliver services in a different way. Collaborations will be needed – no one company can do everything.

IIPSI will try to assist in this growth by hosting the first West Midlands SME meetup on the subject.  The aim is to build a community of likeminded organisations willing to collaborate and explore, and innovate with IoT products or application.

This event will be an informal ‘Show and Tell’ event, featuring short talks from those innovating within the ‘Internet of Things’.  Come and meet, explore and be inspired.

Speakers:

  • Maurizio Pilu, Lead Technologist (Digital) & Programme lead for the Internet of Things at the Technology Strategy Board. “What is the Internet of Things?”
  • Alyson Fielding, MD of Pyuda Ltd. Gesture controlled, connected Books.
  • Ben Wood, Technology Transfer Specialist at WMG. 3D printing and low volume manufacturing.
  • John Shermer, MD of JSJS Designs Ltd. Using occupancy data for the greater good.
  • Miles Hodkinson, CTO of Cicesco plc. Wireless comms options for your IoT products.

The International Institute for Product and Service Innovation (IIPSI) is marked as Building Number 27 on the University of Warwick campus map found here: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/campusmap/.

Car Parks 15 and 8 are closest (£1.50 for <4 hours, £3 for 4+ hours, CASH ONLY). Or there is a well serviced bus stop close by and bike racks attached to the building.

If anyone is interested in the role of data in the digital economy, there's a 'Doing business with data' event on at Millennium Point worth checking out. http://www.sciencecapital.co.uk/2014-digital-world

Your chance to see Steffan Aquarone again, who gave a fascinating talk on money at IOT last month.

This first meet-up revealed possibilities for IOT research knowledge sharing through varied presentations given by innovators/government funding bodies and business owners and the interesting mix of tech developers, entrepreneurs and researchers present. Thanks to Scott and the team.

Well organised, good facilities, interesting presentations with some points to explore later. Good punchy format, though possibly 15 mins per speaker might have added slightly without increasing time too much. Interesting discussion / networking afterwards.

Thanks for feedback John, I tend to agree on the timing but we might drop one presentation next time.

Great to see so many at first Midlands IoT meetup last night. A big thanks to Scott for pulling this together. Its important that we now build on this, develop new connections and kick start IoT in the core of the UK. If we can help further let us know.

See you end of June / early July. Thanks Mark

Really good to be in a room full of like minded individuals. From an SME standpoint in the m2m sector it is not very often we get to network with fellow travellers.
Really liked the 10 minute 'snappy' presentation format, I think this works really well, it is enough time for the main points of the presentation across allowing you to pursue more detail afterwards if it is an area of interest.
Great location and great hospitality too!
I look forward to the next meetup :-)

All. Thanks for attending and making it a great first event. No doubt we'll be running further events, just got to chat about what was good and bad and fix a date - hopefully end of June/early July. If you have any suggestions for things you'd like to see presented, or would like to present yourself, just get in touch. Thanks, Scott
