National Day of Civic Hacking

5/31/13
OpenHack + IC Animal Shelter

Our goal is to build a cute and fuzzy Animal App (think ADOPT MEEE!!!) for the animal shelter here in town. See a cat or dog at the shelter that you really like ? What if you could put your own funny caption on it's picture and share on your Facebook, Twitter, etc ? Your own personal LOLCats !!!

We are writing this cute/silly/fuzzy app to help increase the adoption rate of animals from the shelter. Cats in particular don't get adopted as often as dogs. All the data is there so lets see what we can put together during this National Day of Civic Hacking. This is an all volunteer effort. We even have server space donated by Heroku! Public invited - Sunday 1pm - 4pm downtown IC

Also there will be the usual Hardware experts around for those who want to talk robot tech.  We will have an EggBot to show off as well.  Bring your hard-boiled eggs and we will unleash the EggBot upon them!

Update (2103/05/31):

We're excited to have this next OpenHack as a part of the National Day of Civic Hacking.  Essentially, it will be the same as any other OpenHack (Sunday, 1-4pm), but we'll have at least one civic-oriented project for people to work on if they'd like.  Otherwise, you're free to bring whatever you'd like and just come hang out with other local techies.  :)

Update (2013/05/28): We're planning to work on a small web app for the Iowa City Animal Center.  It would be great if you'd like to help out, but you can work on whatever you'd like if you attend.  We've already gotten some code up on GitHub, if you want to get started early.

Original post:

We’re excited that our next OpenHack will be part of the National Day of Civic Hacking. It will be taking place on Sunday, June 2nd (and possibly the preceding Saturday, June 1st).

Since that doesn't fit in our normal “3rd Sunday of the month” schedule, we've decided not to meet on May 19th (tomorrow). This also makes sense because it’s a busy graduation weekend for the University of Iowa, and the weather on May 19th isn't supposed to be very good either.

So, for now, please hang onto your hacking energy and bring it along during the National Day of Civic Hacking! Although we’ll have some project ideas there, people will still be encouraged to bring their own. Regardless, it should be a great opportunity to build something and give back to the community. All skill levels are welcome, of course. :)

NOTE: The time frame for the June 2nd meetup isn't set in stone yet; we might meet earlier in the day than normal.

    Hi OpenHackers,
Sorry I'm a little late to the party with this project idea, but inspiration never strikes when you want it to.

I work with digital collections at University Libraries. I was looking back at our 2008 flood collection (http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/flood) yesterday and was wishing I had a map view to better browse the photos. Then I started wondering what other photos are out there on local, county, state, personal, third-party sites and how I could aggregate them into one map view. I also live in Creekside neighborhood, where we've already had one damaging flash flood this year (we had one last year as well). When the city came to meet with our neighborhood about flood prevention last year, it would have been really great to have been able to point them to images of the flooding and the damage. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in building a site to aggregate citizen and public documentation of flooding?

At minimum this could be just a map view with data points and submission form for users to upload metadata and links to their own (already geocoded) data at external sites, but I could see potential for much more. If we were to also offer a data export, maybe this would be something IFIS could use as a data layer (http://ifis.iowaflood...) if they're interested. Maybe the city would be interested in the data. I don't know.

Anyway, I've put my data up at https://github.com/sav... if you want to play around with it. I'll be at the meetup today if anyone wants to talk about it. I don't know Rails, so I don't know how much I can contribute to the Animal Shelter app. But if anyone's interested in talking this idea out with me this afternoon, I'm all ears.

For anyone planning to work on the Animal Center app:

I wrote a tutorial on how to get your development environment set up. It's available as the GitHub project's README.

    https://github.com/OpenHackIC/animal_center#readme

If you have some time before the event tomorrow, please take a few minutes to make sure you can get the app running on your machine -- that way we can spend more time developing and less time troubleshooting. :)

    See you tomorrow!

I'm really sorry I can't make this! I'm definitely interested in doing some evening or weekend hacking on this if the animal shelter project doesn't get finished this weekend. Good luck!

Just a heads-up for everyone, yes we are focusing on the animal shelter app this sunday.
There will also be hardware and hardware discussions going on as well - I will be bringing my EggBot and possibly more...

This is a repost, just in case changing the description doesn't notify attendees:

Are we going to be doing "civic hacking", or hardware/software discussion? Some of the comments are pointed to a hardware discussion, while the description seems to point to Civic Hacking.

It'll be a little of both. Basically, the plan is to have a normal OpenHack event, but with civic-hacking-oriented project that people can contribute to if they'd like.

We've got a page on the National Day of Civic Hacking website! http://www.hackforchange.org/iowa-city-openhack-hackathon Twitter hashtag for the day is #hackic, for anyone inclined.

Sorry to hear that, Dave! Any chance Saturday would work out better? We're considering doing both Saturday and Sunday for this event.

Saturday would be perfect - I've got a Roomba that needs hacking...

Who will be bringing the Civic?

    May 18, 2013

    • Benjamin O.

If someone wants to bring a Honda Civic to hack, that's fine too, but otherwise we'll be focusing on lowercase-c civic. :)

I might bring a friend who is interested in arduino and 3-d printers.
