Designing for future devices like apple watch

Details

Building on last year’s event around wearables, this month we will continue to explore progressive interaction design by focusing on case studies around designing for a new device and platform — the apple watch.

Many teams developing apple watch apps have been hard at work modelling new experiences, working within interface guidelines and iterating without the ability to test with real users. More importantly, most teams have had no access to the device itself.

• How did they design in the dark?

• How did they simulate interacting with the device?

• How did they decide what would work on the watch vs. smartphone app?

• How did they use the new interaction controls available to them?

• How would they have changed things now they have used the device?

Our guest speakers and experienced audience members will aim to answer these questions and more, but we will try not to delve into the bigger cerebral questions of how successful the platform will be, and focus more on the craft level design decisions the teams made.

We received lots of interest from people to come along and talk. Some will be able to be completely open, and some may be a little more secret squirrel, but throughout the audience and the speaker sessions themselves, we will be covering everything from interacting with ATMs, opening cars, controlling hotel rooms, and finding bicycles around town.
