7:30PM - From Knots to Notes: The Old and the New
a presentation & discussion with Mark Siegeltuch + Scott Kilgour
This will be an revelation for all of you - artists, musicians, and the art-curious. Beyond the elaborate beauty in Scottish and British Isle knot work, there is an amazing encoding of music recording far more elaborate than the musical note & staff documentation we are broadly familiar with...
Mark and Scott will share their knowledge and touch on the larger context of this traditional work and its presence then & now. The premise of the talk:
A number of standing stones in the British Isles contain an unusual method for recording music that uses interlaced designs. A brief analysis will be provided plus a briefer discussion of the links between this system of encoding and even older ideas based on the use of knots.
The artist, Scott Kilgour, has used knot-work designs in his own work. He will talk about his thoughts on his Interspace exhibit, which he completed in 1999 and first exhibited in Glasgow, Scotland.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Siegeltuch is the author of The Thread-Spirit: The Symbolism of Knotting Weaving and Spinning (http://www.amazon.com/The-Thread-Spirit-Symbolism-Knotting-Fiber/dp/1891785451) and has written and lectured widely on the subject of traditional symbolism. He makes his living as a technical writer and trainer in the fields of telecommunications, networking, and software.
Scott Kilgour was born in Glasgow and attended Glasgow School of Arts in Scotland where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts. He moved to New York in the early 1980s and has had numerous gallery and museum exhibitions in both Europe and the US. Scott has an upcoming exhibition at Bleeker Street Arts Club... more on that here (http://bsacny.com/exhibitions/20/overview/).
