JSChannel London's inaugural meetup!

  • October 23, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • McKinsey & Company Conference Centre

We're organising the first ever JSChannel meetup in London! We plan on having two talks, followed by snacks, beer and copious mingling with other people who're as interested as you in JavaScript!

The first talk will be from Ben Gillies (@bengillies). Ben's a software developer currently working for Digital Science, an innovative technology company based in London trying to change the way science is done. Currently working with d3 and Ember, he's been making JavaScript heavy client side apps for several years now and has developed a carefully honed aversion to complexity, something he now finds somewhat ironic given his technology choices. He used to work for Osmosoft, the open source arm of BT on an ambitious extensible web platform called TiddlySpace. The talk will be on all things ES6, titled "The evolution of web frameworks: ES6 and beyond". It should last 15-20 minutes, plus questions.

The second talk will be from Joe Pettersson (@Joe8Bit). Joe's a long time JavaScript developer, speaker at conferences and soon to be author on the subject. He's currently the Technical Lead of UI Engineering at McKinsey & Company (and the meetup organiser!) where he works on modern web and mobile applications for McKinsey's many clients. He's going to be talking about something close to his heart, notifications in async JavaScript: patterns and anti-patterns, as well as a short intro to the mechanics of the event loop and what asynchronicity actually is in JavaScript. It should last 20-30 mins, plus questions.

And all of the slides will be available soon after the meetup.

The meetup will be held at our sponsors venue, a fantastic conference centre at the London headquarters of McKinsey & Company. We have capacity for 70+ people, so come one come all!

We'll kick off at 6:30, the talks should be finished just after 7:00 and we'll finish off around 8:00, before inevitably adjourning to one of the many pubs in the local area!

After at the meetup

Afterwards we'll be heading to the Comedy Pub, just around the corner from the meetup location (< 5 minutes walk). The address is 7 Oxendon St Piccadilly, London SW1Y 4EE. Maps link.

I wasn't able to make it last week but I'd like to give my (future events) voting to:
    1. A Hackathon: I'm definitely up for that
    2. Talks topic suggestion: Promises in JavaScript

Great talks, great venue - an all great first meetup. I will attend the next ones and hopefully stay for drinks as well.

good informative event, smart people, talks were great at giving overviews and details where needed. This was a great first event, would definitely attend another. Javascript seems a rather under served community in London for it's size so these events would be a help to get us all talking and working together.

I thought both talks were enjoyable; even for ears that were already familiar with the subject! I definitely left with some food-for-thought.

All in all, a very good evening.

Loved the presentations last night, great choices for a first meetup. Quite generic topics, which is great because this way more people can find something interesting.

For the future, I'd like to see more specific talks, but we have to be careful because going too niche could put half of the audience to sleep! :)

    Well done guys.

Two enthusiastic thumbs up and would recommend to friends. The talks were really interesting although I wouldn't have minded them being a little longer to go more in-depth. I'm definitely interested in coming again.

Thanks for the talks guys. Quite a lot of useful things to talk to my clients about. Look forward to getting access to the slides. I know a few of my friends will find the ES6 slides quite interesting.

I look forward to the next one! :)

This event was very well done. Good speakers and topics. Talks just right in length. Came away with some ideas. A good brain itch. Thank you to the organizers.

Some interesting stuff. The talks were very quick though, as in there was too much info so the speakers were flying through it. Perhaps more focused talks that take the time to explore the focused topic.
