DrupalJax February Meetup (#12): Starting your site: Where to begin?!

Happy anniversary. Its our 1-year anniversary of the DrupalJax group. We will continue our series on building your site with Drupal. In January we went over setting up your local dev environment. This month we'll look at installing your site and what to do once you have Drupal installed. What are the top modules you'll want to immediately install and how can you start customizing your site.

We'll also feature a module roundtable. Come prepared with what module you have found useful that most people haven't heard about yet.

There will be cake this month to celebrate the 1-year anniversary but we are looking for a location so please let me or Jitesh know if you have space for us this month.

Meeting Agenda:

- Introductions
- Happy Birthday/Cake
- FL Drupal Camp update
- Presentation: Starting your site: Where to begin? by Kevin Basarab
- Module Roundtable: What modules have you found most useful recently or you use on all your sites?
- Q&A/Wrap up. Head to Seven Bridges for post-meeting drinks/food between 7:30-8.

I do not know if you guys have covered this or would during one of the meetups, but I would be interested in seeing how you develop the site on your local machine, then push to the Client's server. I have done this once for my project using Drupal, but not sure if it was the correct way.
Then what is the processes of having a development site on your local machine or wherever and then pushing certain changes to the live site, how is this done (do you push files, do you first make the changes on your dev site and then log into the live site and duplicate those manual changes or is there a module/script that can push changes)?
I figured I would ask to see this in an upcoming meetup since the trend for the coming months is creating your site and what is contained in that processes.

It depends on the situation. For my personal sites I usually develop locally then do a Git push and SQL sync to production. For a client site I put all configuration of the site in features and let features handle it from there. This works great but can lead to issues if the client is constantly changing configurations on the live site. One way to relegate this though is to disable the "ui" modules and have client make changes on a dev site then you capture those into features and push up to production.

That sounds great for a client that is also constantly content. I have a couple that have items to sell and change these items.
