We will focus on reading Japanese literature, both classic and modern (gendai bungaku). More classics than modern, but different genres and periods, including books written about Japanese cultures by non-Japanese authors, will be read. This way, both classic & latest sub-cultures of Japan can be explored from various perspectives.
We will meet once a month in West LA. Discussions will be in English. Non-Japanese speakers as well as those Japanese who do not speak much English are welcomed (as there will be always one or two, including myself, who can interpret conversations). Group will be low key and relaxed.
December is coming but there is no snow here in LA...So I thought we would appreciate the winter by reading Snow County by Kawabata Yasunari.
For some of us who are not familiar with Kawabata, he is one of the two Japanese Nobel prize winners for literature. His prize in 1968 was "for his narrative mastery, which with great sensibility expresses the essence of the Japanese mind". Read more
