MongoDB with Derick Rethans

  • September 20, 2012 · 7:00 PM

Because we're inviting other groups, we've closed RSVPs from here and arranged for everyone to RSVP through EventBrite: http://mongodb-jax.eventbrite.com/.

Please RSVP soon to help us estimate attendance and select a venue. And tell your friends!

This date (not our usual first Tues) was arrived at through elaborate process to schedule Derick's Southeast tour, with intensive input from Ligaya to make sure we stayed in the loop.  (Many thanks, Lig!)

To make all that effort worthwhile, we'll be inviting RubyJax and other local groups to join us for this meetup, so it should be a good networking opportunity for us, too.

Cool. I'll try to do something creative with them tomorrow.

This was really good, and got me thinking and I changed my code again!

Hey Eric - where are the pictures?

    September 25, 2012

    • Ligaya T.

Ohh - I thought you were also taking pictures of it when it occurred.

      September 25, 2012

    • Eric N.

I planned to, but Derick asked me to use his fancy camera, so I didn't use mine. (They're all Derick talking with other people watching him, so not very exciting.)

Thanks to JaxPHP, Derick and everyone who helped putting on the presentation.

    September 21, 2012

  • Eric N.

Derick customized his presentation for our group (more agnostic than devout PHP) so it's not on the web quite yet, but I'll post the link when it's ready.

ALL - APPARENTLY THE ADDRESS BRINGS YOU ACROSS THE STREET TO A DIFFERENT BUILDING. WE ARE IN THE ADECCO GROUP BUILDING ON THE 1ST FLOOR - THE ADDRESS YOU CAN TRY IS 10151 CENTURION PARKWAY NORTH #502

is this for a meet up with professionals or just to hang out? Are there going to be women there? I need a new girlfiriend

    September 13, 2012

    • Ligaya T.

I am going to take the high road and just assume you honestly didn't mean to be as insulting as this implied... Mostly because no one should be that stupid.

      September 14, 2012

    • Eric N.

So based on your comment, it doesn't look like the smart, professional women in our group are your best bets for a new girlfriend.

Updated the description here to note that Derick's planning to be less PHP-specific in Jax to accommodate other grooups. http://mongodb-jax.eventbrite.c...

And I'm pleased to report that as of yesterday we'd "sold" 48 seats, 80% of our allotment. (And only one through Eventbrite's promotions - all word-of mouth.)

Thanks, Justin. I wasn't sure which Adecco address to use.

    June 26, 2012

  • Ligaya T.

The eventbrite address will need to be updated as well...

    June 26, 2012

  • Justin W.

Eric, if you want to add the address for the event, it is 10151 Deerwood Park Blvd Jacksonville, FL 32256 (and it says Adecco Group on the building).

I put the word out to the LUG last meeting (though not to their mailing list) to help get the word out. Also hope to do it with a few other groups I attend as time goes by.

  • Eric N.

Awesome, Justin. We have 16 RSVPs after posting it only on our Meetup. And I have a list of other Meetup and other user groups to tell about it - just wanted to make sure we could handle the traffic first! I'll limit the RSVPs to about 60 for now. If we get close to the limit we may have to check IDs!

We have a free space at Adecco corporate if we want it - I already put the reservation in just to make sure it was available and it is. If Tek would like to supply the food that'd be great!

    June 25, 2012

  • Ben

Tek Systems said that their conference room is a bit crowded at 25, but they would love to help sponsor the meeting in any other way (possibly including food). So, if we met somewhere else (like Justin's workplace or somewhere else), they could help make Derick feel welcome with food. If they can pay for a facility (they mentioned that the Bank of America building in Regency is $67), that would be even better.

  • Justin W.

My corporate office can hold more than 50 people in a nice facility there, which is just two buildings down from the Modis building if you'd like =) just let me know so I can reserve it

    June 25, 2012

  • Ben

I just contacted my recruiter contact over there. I'll post back when I hear if they can handle 50 or so people.

    June 25, 2012

  • Eric N.

Finally figured out a way to make the location undefined, except for zip. What a pain.

    June 25, 2012

  • Eric N.

Good suggestions, Lig and Ben. Ben, any idea how many people Tek could accommodate? I don't want to bother them unless it's a large number.

    June 25, 2012

  • Ben

actually Tek Systems said they want to host a meeting. Also, the Ramada Inn on San Jose has decent size conference rooms. That is where my Toastmasters club meets.

contact UNF - the computer Science college to see if they would let us use something there

    June 25, 2012

  • Eric N.

Here's an interesting question. If 50 people want to come to this event, where do we meet? I haven't had this problem before, and Meetup no longer seems to offer a list of venues.

(No, it won't be at a Starbucks, I'm just having trouble with the latest version of the location settings. It's getting hard to tell the features from the bugs. I've had to resort to the Meetup organizer forum for help.)

All good. I get to see a friend and learn about a new technology. Win-Win situation.

Thanks, Ligaya, for all your effort to coordinate this and keep us in the loop.

actually Sept is a date we are working on. Working with the Miami, Atlanta and Nashville groups and hopefully Orlando to get a roadshow set up for derick. It is all still tentative though

    May 24, 2012

  • Eric N.

The date is tentative. (I filled it in by accident and I can't delete it, just change it later.)

    May 24, 2012

  • Eric N.

I didn't realize Derick was flying in from elsewhere. So this one goes on the back burner until it fits into his schedule at some future date. So lets talk about JSON next week so we can all sound smarter when he does get here!

    May 24, 2012

  • Ligaya T.

When I was talking to Derick it was for him to fly out for the meeting and more then likely stay at my place overnight. Not sure if he is going to try and "bunch" a couple of meetings in Florida while he is here.

Last time I talked to him was when he was at PHPDay in Italy and AFAIK he is not at Tek this year so I will try to get with him this week.

    May 24, 2012

  • Eric N.

Sent him background and suggested dates, so we'll see what works for him. If it isn't Jun 03, I'm thinking we should talk then about JSON, partly because I've been meaning to do that anyway, but also because BSON (binary JSON) is what MongoDB records and queries are made of.

    May 23, 2012

  • Ligaya T.

FYI - I am in talks with him now to see if we can set things up. Will let you know how things go.

    May 10, 2012

  • Ligaya T.

if you have problems getting a hold of hi, just let me know.

    May 10, 2012

  • Eric N.

Should be lots of interest in this - need to arrange a date.
