Tri-State Jazz Society's annual jam session provides an opportunity for members of local bands to jam together for an afternoon of spontaneous fun. The music is sure to include some familiar toe-tapping Dixieland tunes as well as swing era classics. Expect some great solo and ensemble improvisation. The core band will start off the session and they will be joined by other musicians. Musicians who would like to sit in should bring their instruments and register at the admissions table. All who come to play will be admitted free. A keyboard will be available for pianists.

During the first break, there will be a brief annual meeting to elect directors for the 2011-2012 membership year. Members will have an opportunity to renew their membership dues, which expire June 30.

This Year's Core Band Members

Dan Tobias—Leader, Trumpet
Dan has become a much sought-after cornetist in the Delaware Valley, and nationally, and can be heard performing with the Midiri Brothers, Jerry Rife's Rhythm Kings, Stan Rubin, Jon-Erik Kellso, Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, Ed Wise and his New Orleans Jazz Band, and other leading traditional jazz and swing groups. His phrasing is lyrical, his tone fat and relaxed. Dan played for us at Tri-State Jazz Society most recently in Cinnaminson with the Midiri Brothers. See him on video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvHwI9YNHuw .

Jerry Rife—Clarinet
Jerry earned two degrees in music at Kansas State University and a PhD in Musicology at Michigan State University. Leader of the highly-respected Rhythm Kings, he teaches at Rider University and at Westminster Choir College. He directs the band at Rider and has been the conductor and musical director of the 70-member Blawenburg Band since 1985. He last performed for Tri-State Jazz Society in February with his Rhythm Kings.

Joe McDonough—Trombone
Joe has been playing the trombone since age nine and has performed at Catalina’s Bar and Grill and The Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center, and The Perleman Theater at the Kimmel Center. Currently pursuing a Masters in Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School, he teaches trombone and gives master classes at high schools across the tri-state area. This will be Joe's first appearance at TSJS.
Pat Mercuri—Guitar
Pat Mercuri is one of the best jazz guitarists in the Delaware Valley - or just about anywhere else. In addition to his many performances for the Tri-State Jazz Society with the Midiri Brothers, he’s recently played for us with Ed Wise and His New Orleans Jazz Band and with Jerry Rife’s Rhythm Kings. His "clock," as jazz musicians describe a player's sense of rhythm, is impeccable. His solos are subtle and fluent..

Harry Salotti—Tuba
Harry Salotti plays tuba with the Atlantic City Jazz Band and the Mason-Dixon jazz Band. He's also a member of the Seacoast Brass Quintet and has played in various casinos in Atlantic City. You can hear him on his own CD, Full Swing Ahead, available at http://www.cdbaby.com/ . Harry last played for TSJS last October.
Paul Midiri—Drums
Paul Midiri, drums, is probably best known for his vibes work with The Midiri Brothers. Indeed, as Brian D. Clifford put it in Express-Time, “His amazing virtuosity brought to mind some of the great vibes players of our time.” But he's also a fine drummer, trombone player, arranger, and composer. According to Ed Wismer in the Sentinel-Ledger, "...Paul provided the most dazzling drum work I've heard since Buddy Rich's heyday..." and Marvin Randolph says in the Sun Sentinel that "Paul Midiri on drums brings back memories of Gene Krupa with his great brush work...."
