The Greensand Way

A Look Back on the Greensand Way
The Greensand Way is a 110 mile route that follows a sandstone ridge through Surrey and Kent, roughly parallel to the North Downs Way a short distance to the North and the Sussex Border Path to the South. We added another 42 miles with the links to and from railway stations, and the occasional detour to a pub or interesting sight or nowhere in particular before we got back on the path. We started at the South-Eastern end in midwinter in Kent, resumed in April with a glorious run of weather through to September, then made up for up it with plenty of rain in the Surrey Hills in the Autumn.

All in all this was the most scenic long-distance path we have done and there was fantastic camaraderie throughout.

Section 10
An excellent company of 23 hikers set out in the sunshine at Witley for a pleasant stroll into the wooded hills. Soon the storm clouds gathered, and the picnic lunch in the churchyard was interrupted by bursts of rain, with a large contingent taking shelter under an accommodating yew tree. We pressed on up into the wilderness of Hindhead Common to a sweeping view out over the Devil's Punch Bowl, where we we stopped only for a photo shoot in the bracing wind. Almost in Haselmere and the narrow path was blocked by the massive trunk and branches of a recently fallen tree. We crawled through a gap underneath and the town was ours for the taking. At an appropriate looking monument five hikers congratulated themselves on completing the whole Greensand Way and then we all dived into the warm cosy pub, dragging ourselves away to get to the train station with seconds to spare.
