http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/6/7/4/event_162942612.jpeg Gunung Semangkok, which thrones in the distance once one reaches the second peak of Pine Tree Trail of Fraser's Hill, has been a "nightmare" for many hikers the last couple of years.

There was no clear trail to the summit, but eventually some determined hikers succeeded in clearing the track to the peak.

This is a new trail and the summit doesn't reward the hiker with a view. Only a laminated sheet makes it clear you have reached the summit of another Malaysian mountain.

The climb is not easy, also because of the distance which has to be covered. The first part of the hike, the track to the Pine Tree twin peaks of Fraser's hill is heaven compared with what's coming next. Although it seems that Semangkok is relatively closeby, be prepared for another five hours to reach the summit. Because of its many ups and downs, it's better not to underestimate the journey back.

An average fit hiker must be able to cover the total distance of almost 30km and more than 3.5km gain in altitude in 12 to 16 hours. That's why we have to start early for this challenging event. We all will leave early morning before daybreak and be prepared to leave the jungle after nightfall...

It is not necessary to aim reaching the summit of Semangkok. If you want to get the feel of it, you are free to join, provided that you respect the cut-off time which will be announced at the start of the hike.

There are a few water points along the way and you will certainly need lots of fluids and nutrition to keep your engine going...

Because of the distance of the hike it might happen that you have to hike on your own for quite a while. Be prepared for that. The trail is relatively well marked, but paper trail will be laid out where there might be confusion.

Hopefully carpooling can be arranged and pick-up places will depend on the residence of the participants. For this hike, the carpooling fee is fixed at RM15.00 per passenger. Passengers, please don't wait for your driver to ask for the fee...

It would be nice if you could change the hometown in your profile to the location of your residence (eg USJ 11, Damansara Perdana, SS 7, Sentul, Seksyen 5 Shah Alam, Bandar Puteri Puchong, Ampang, etc...). This will make carpooling efforts much easier.

In order to allow me to communicate directly with the participants, no guests are allowed. At many occasions in the past, guests were not properly briefed by their respective hosts. If you want your guests to participate, ask them to sign up as a member; it's free. They can cancel their membership after the hike if they want to.

Besides the classical hiking tips, please note the following:

wear shoes with profile (a pattern on the soles to prevent slipping and gliding). Adidas Kampung is fine.

rain gear is recommended

bring a towel and some dry clothes/shoes and leave it in the car - passengers also bring some newspapers and towels in order to keep your driver's car as clean as possible

we have to cross no streams

pack all your sensitive stuff in your backpack in plastic bags

there are no restrooms at the car park

a pair of gloves doesn't weigh that much (thorns, roots, trees, mud)

bring enough drinks and snacks (carbohydrates). For this hike you will need at least 4 to 6 liters of drinks. Dried fruits are preferred over chocolate...

leech protection is recommended

bring a whistle and a headlamp; otherwise no hike

please be responsible and don't litter – be sure not to leave any rubbish along the track and at the summit
