Paddle Nauset Marsh, Eastham

We will paddle north through Salt Pond Bay and the vast marsh. There is new vegetation where we used to land, so we will probably not find a non-muddy place to get out of our boats for a break.

High tide on the outer beaches of Nauset Marsh is about 9:00 AM, so we will launch at 10:00; judging from how low the water was at high tide when we paddled here in May, we'll need a high tide to get over to the Coast Guard Station.

Hemenway Landing requires a sticker for parking in the parking lot. After unloading your kayak on the beach, you can legally park along the side of the road immediately above the parking lot.

If you haven't been to Fort Hill, it's right next to Hemenway Landing. You can even walk into parts of it from the launch area...or drive over.

LEAVE ENOUGH TIME FOR TRAVEL, UNLOADING AND PARKING UP THE STREET. WE'LL BE LEAVING THE BEACH AT 10:00. If you are late and want to try to catch up with us, paddle to the left, stay along the shore on the left and paddle towards the left.

I will email you the evening before if I think weather may force a cancellation.

All paddles are for experienced and energetic paddlers. This is not a place to "get experience on the water"...you need that experience before paddling with this group.

DIRECTIONS: From the Orleans Rotary, take Rt 6 north / east, go 2.1 miles (pass Fort Hill and Govenor Prence Rd on your right) and turn right on Hemenway Rd. This is NOT an obvious turn. Drive 0.3 mile, cross the parking lot and drive onto the beach where you unload your gear.

From the outer Cape, on Rt.6 driving south / west, pass the National Seashore Visitor Center (Salt Pond) on your left at the stop light..continue on Rt 6 for 1.2 mile. Watch for these 3 roads on your left: Christian Creek, Rabbit Run and Aeries, then turn left on Hemenway Rd.

The turn onto Hemenway Rd from either direction is not very obvious and the traffic on Rt 6 is difficult in that area. If you miss the turn, please go to the next traffic light to turn around...it's dangerous to stop in the left lane of 6A, hoping to cross the road and make the U turn.
