Thurs, Aug 21 - Paddle from Snow Shore, Orleans through Nauset Marsh

I have never done this paddle. I do not know anyone who has done this paddle. And I don't know anything about this paddle. That said....

We'll launch at the arrow above from an Orleans town landing on Snow Shore Rd. It is a paved boat ramp, but there is nice sand next to the ramp. Orleans info says there are 12 parking places, but when Beth and I went to look at this launch last week, it looked more like 10 places. There is nothing posted about stickers being required and there is a strip of road leading into the parking area that seems to have legal parking on one side.

High tide in the outer Nauset area is about 9:44 AM. There probably won't be many mud flats exposed where shorebirds feed, but there will be plenty of water so that we do not get stuck out there. It is probably the safest tide for a paddle with which I have no experience

We'll head  south/southeast toward The Horn and try to get to Inlet Marsh, home to colonies of Terns and Laughing Gulls. If the tide is right, we may be able to get out and take a break, given that we do not disturb any birds.

This would be a bad paddle in high winds, so wind or possible lightning will cancel.

DIRECTIONS: From the Orleans Rotary..Take Rt 28 off the rotary and go to stop light at Main St. Take left on Main. Left on Tonset Rd. Keep right on Hopkins Lane. Left on Brick Hill.  Keep right at fork on Champlain Rd. Turn right on Smugglers Path. Take left on Show Shore Rd.

Please click on the map provided by google on this page. Leave lots of time to get lost. We'll be in the water and moving at 10:00. If you have a hand held GPS. please bring it...or GPS on your phone.  I will lay down a track on my GPS, but I don't have MA maps loaded.

Hi Joyce. Sorry I have not made any paddles. I've been busy. But my younger daughter is coming to town. (26 and enjoys kayaking.) May follow up with you on this one.

Thanks for reply. I think I signed up for some upcoming Saturday morning events that chops the day in half. Usually, I have work commitments or house DIY etc during daytime hours, including weekends. Recreation for me, at least currently is after 5 or 6pm. Week day evening tides have been favorable for me on solo trips Swan River and Crowes Pasture for past week or so. I am going to try the Full moon paddle in Plymouth tonight. Seems like you are very active, good for you. It's really more of a time of day conflict for me vs number of events you hosted. Thank's see you whenever the Saturday event is.

Thomas, everything depends on the tides and when I'm free. In May, I posted paddles and walks on every weekend day (I think 2 of the paddles were blown off the water). In June, 6 events were scheduled on weekend days. In July, we had events on 7 out of 8 weekend days. In August, that does not work.....and there are only 2 weekend events posted.

With almost no exceptions, I post 2 paddles and 1 walk every week = 12 events every month.....not bad, huh?
