A study group learning Manx or Gaelg, a Celtic language closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Our aim is to learn conversational Manx and to have fun doing it. Manx is the native language of the Isle of Man, a self-governing nation in the British Isles between Britain and Ireland. It is spoken by more than 1,600 people on the island, which has a total population of about 80,000. Manx almost died out in the last century but was introduced in Manx schools in the 1990s, greatly adding to the number of people who speak it and are familiar with it. The Manx government is committed to promoting it as key part of the island's unique cultural identity. There is a new generation of young speakers, thanks in part to nursery programs and a Manx primary school. You should come join us if you're interested the Isle of Man, Celtic and Gaelic languages, have Manx heritage or hail from the island. We typically meet every other week, on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon, from 2-4 p.m. We have a spring and fall semester of about 8 to 10 classes each, for 16 to 20 classes a year. We also have other events during the year.
