Kids Communicate is a group for kids (Grades 3 - 7) who have Aspergers, or high functioning autism. The group is also for children who have challenges with verbal and/or written communication, but good intelligence.
The group will focus on written/verbal communication and social interaction/social skills. (FREE / NO COST!)
(See below for meeting dates and times).
My daughter is going into 4th grade and has Aspergers. I wanted a group like this for her, so decided to start this one, begining June 2009. We had our first meetup June 6.
Last summer, we started a project with a group of kids who created digital stories and published them to the web.
This summer, we will expand on that project to include other methods of communication. Our 2009 Kids Communicate project will include focus on the following areas:
1. Written communication
2. Verbal communication
3. Social interaction and FUN
Sessions will involve the following activities (and more ...):
1. Drama, Role Play and Acting
2. Writing
3. Creating PowerPoint presentations and giving presentations
4. Creating videos
5. Communication and social activities
6. and playing ...................... :-)
This will be a practical, hands on group where kids can interact with each other, have fun, and also work on practical written and verbal communication tasks. For each meetup time, I will describe what we want to achieve and the goals for that meetup. I will also let you know what each group will focus on (e.g. socialization/fun; writing; verbal communication). I encourage parents to help with suggestions and planning group activities.
I am an occupational therapist and have had 25 years of dealing with students who have special needs. My own child has Asperger's, and I am interested in starting something which will benefit her as well as other children in our area who have Asperger's. This group is specifically for higher cognitive functioning children who have written or verbal communication problems.
Sign up if you are interested.
Jennifer had a great idea: a chocolate party (with gluten free / casein free, AND regular chocolate and goodies :-)
This will be at the Morkes chocolate shop in Algonquin. www.morkeschocolates.com
We do need to let them know how many kids will be attending AND how many want GF/CF ingredients so they can order the right amount of allergy-free chocolate. Read more
Kevin has offered a wonderful meeting space for our group. Thanks Kevin!
