Making the Clojure Paradigm Shift for Newbies

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • Some people had to go through a major paradigm shift from procedural programming to the Object Oriented model. We know about this experience, even if our first language was Java, because we've seen the pseudo-procedural programs written by people who didn't make the shift. So, we're interested in Clojure. We're intrigued by STM. We're curious about coding in Clojure, but we're fearful of our code not being truly idiomatic functional code. This talk will be led by experienced functional style Clojure coders who will guide the newbies in how to approach using Clojure to solve the problems they see in a clean, functional manner. Lots of questions and answers will be welcomed in this session. This session should appeal to any long time Java developers interested in the new JVM dynamic languages, that is to say any Java developers interested in staying current with the industry and not becoming dinosaurs.

Hey i was going to put the link up about the additional group. Everybody should join his group as well and hopefully we can get something going with one of them. Ive been busy with my work and havent been able to be as responsive as i wanted. So my apologies for that. We are all passionate about the clojure language so lets all work together to get something going with any and all events that people are putting on.

Hey Ross, I saw this when I was looking into Clojure. It is from the University of Helsinki CS department and you only need a Github account to participate. From below article:
"The course is taught in English and requires students to have basic programming skills, but no experience with functional programming is needed. To participate you must register for a GitHub account and you complete the course by forking GitHub repositories that contain the course materials and and programming solutions to exercises embedded in them."

Thanks for the great links. Maybe people can go through them and at the meetup they can give their thoughts on them pro or con. Ill try to look at them myself over the weekend.

OkCupidLabs will be moving spaces to the Hub (http://thehubla.com) as soon as their construction delays are over. That's hopefully by Sep. 1st.

Hopefully we'll be able to host pretty soon after that, and I'll be communicating with the staff at the Hub regarding the protocol for hosting events.

I want to be one of the Clojure cool kids!

I'd be glad to help lead a discussion about clojure. I've got a decent amount of experience in it having used it for a couple years now.
