Data Science @ Netflix

Details

In our 2nd Data Science Track event, we'll have Douglas Twisselmann talk about Data Science @ Netflix.

I'm still looking for speakers for the next Data Science Track events, so talk to your boss if you can present "Data Science @ Your Company" and send me (Szilard) an email/message. If your company is recruiting, giving a talk at this meetup is one of the best ways to attract prime talent.

Data Science @ Netflix

Douglas Twisselmann and Kevin Wylie

The Netflix content team in Beverly Hills is tasked with the challenge of licensing/purchasing/developing the best TV and movies for its 44 million users in 41 countries. This talk will cover an overview of what the content data science teams do for the organization towards the goals of identifying characteristics of an “ideal” content library, predicting demand for titles that Netflix does not have, determining the customer impact of adding or losing sets of content, and helping to identify the next original series. In addition, we'll cover some data and techniques one might use in demand prediction.

Bios:

Douglas Twisselmann is a Senior Data Scientist in the Science and Algorithms group at Netflix. In this role, he helps Netflix tackle the challenge of optimizing the TV and movie libraries by innovating mathematical models via the ever-growing cache of streaming data. Doug received his B.S. in Chemistry - Materials Science at UCLA and his Ph.D.
in Materials at MIT. How he came to work in data analytics and algorithms at Netflix is a long story.

Kevin Wylie is the Director for the Content Data Science and Engineering group at Netflix. He leads a team of data engineers, and BI engineers and analysts to help drive analytics forward for all things Content. Kevin received his B.S. in Mathematics at VA Tech. UPDATE:

Thanks OpenX (Andy Gooden and Moira Regelson) and yours truly (Szilard Pafka) we are streaming this "Data Science @Netflix" event in Pasadena at OpenX.

To attend the (live) streaming event you need to RSVP here: https://www.meetup.com/LA-RUG/events/174850892/ (that's an LA R meetup, so you'll need to sign up to the R meetup if you are not a member yet).

As Netflix does not allow us to make recordings or share the slides, we'll use a private streaming channel and there will be no opportunity to watch that from home or to see any recordings later.
