Tile: Toward Unconstrained Face Recognition
Abstract: Faces play a critical role in nearly all social interactions. We use faces to recognize people, gauge emotions, ascertain interest, and find a mate. We are often admonished to put your best face forward. Not surprisingly, most images on the Internet contain faces.
Over the last decade, there have been great advances in face
processing, yet the best commercial face recognition systems are
challenged by the unconstrained images so commonly found on the Internet, in personal photo albums, and in surveillance imagery. Even with imperfect face processing, exciting commercial applications are feasible. This talk will describe some of our recent work on face processing including facial fiducial point detection, unconstrained recognition, and recognition in group shots.
BIO:
David J. Kriegman received a B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science from Princeton University (1983), and an M.S. (1984) and Ph.D. (1989) in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Since 2002, he has been a Professor of Computer Science and
Engineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to joining UCSD, he was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Yale University (1990-1998) and an Associate Professor with the Computer Science Department and Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1998-2002).
Kriegman was founding CEO and presently serves as Chief Scientist of Taaz, Inc., the leader in virtual try on of make up, hairstyles, hair color, skin care products, sunglasses, and jewelry. Beyond the 2.5MM visits to taaz.com each month, Taaz provides solutions that run on the web, in stores, on mobile devices, and on the iPad for major media, brand and ecommerce customers.
Kriegman was chosen for a National Science Foundation Young
Investigator Award, and has received best paper awards at the 1996 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), the 1998 European Conference on Computer Vision, and the 2007 International Conference on Computer Vision (Marr Prize, runner up) as well as the 2003 Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Structural Biology. He has served as Program Co-chair of CVPR 2000 and General Co-chair of CVPR 2005. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence from 2005-2008.
