Spark Introduction

Details

As discussed in our last meetup, Spark is what everyone talks about in big data communities nowadays. Many people even claim that Spark is going to replace Hadoop, and all the big tech corps including IBM and Microsoft have integrated Spark into their new big data platforms.

On this meetup, Josh Choi from JPL/NASA and I will give an introduction of Spark with Q&As to follow.

Josh has been a software engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the last 13 years, working on projects for both the NASA's Deep Space Network and Advanced Multimission Operations System organizations. For the latter, he is on the team that built the latest ground data system, which is now being used for the operations of the Mars Curiosity and Soil Moisture Active Passive space missions. About a year ago, he and his associates started working to improve the Deep Space Network operations using complex event processing, or CEP, for which Spark was used. Also, Josh has been evaluating Spark and implementing use cases with it, in preparation for the production work that will begin at end of this year
