For those who haven't noticed yet, Brian has made me the organizer for the Meetup group as of this past Thursday due to time constraints and the fact he may be moving.
The first thing I'd like to propose would be monthly (or so) meetings. One purpose of the meeting would be to discuss upcoming activities and give people the opportunity to volunteer to share the workload of organizing events. But would also serve as an opportunity for socializing and to propose new events and discuss past trips. The exact format and venue is up for discussion, and since the paddling season for the year is nearing its end we probably wouldn't actually start having meetings until next year.
Based on meetings other clubs have, I'd recommend that the venue be at a restaurant on a slow day where we could preferably be in a separate room or secluded from the main dining area. I have a few ideas for places, but would like to hear some ideas. And if you're willing to take on the workload of actually discussing the idea with the manager and flesh out the details, then there's a good chance we'll use that one.
My proposal for the structure of the meeting (also certainly up for discussion) would be: 6p-7p: socializing and dinner 7p: Official meeting starts -Announcements. -New member introductions. -Reports on past meetups since the last meeting. -Reports on trips people took that weren't "official" meetups. -Discussion about upcoming meetups and a call for help. -Proposals for upcoming meetups, call for help, call for information. -General "club" business. -A presentation of some sort.
A copy of this message is being posted in the forum where this topic can be discussed. I sincerely appreciate any ideas and discussion. Sharing the workload of a group containing 500+ members will be essential to making it a great group.
Meet other local Paddlers to plan trips and meetups, talk about local rivers, creeks, and kayak gear.
We are mostly beginner and intermediate paddlers, but all levels and ages welcome!
Trips we have gone on so far have been leisurely paddles on calm waters exploring lakes, creeks and slow moving rivers.
There is no membership fee, nor is there a charge to attend events. Donations are welcome, but never expected.
If you do not own a boat, we do have members kind enough to loan out kayaks on occasion. The best thing to do is just ask around or keep an eye out for anyone offering up a boat for use.
Although we are based in Louisville, we welcome members from all nearby locations, including a loyal following of active members from Southern Indiana.
Also - we will occasionally schedule informal, social meetups to get to know each other better, ask questions and gather ideas for future trips. Everyone is, of course, welcome (and encouraged) to attend.
